Backstory

Wetland grew up on the outermost edges of the Mire-Marshes in a small Spring Circle that outsiders rarely visited and maps barely acknowledged. Where other young Naiads studied at Flow Academies, he learned from the marsh itself: how to read the soil beneath standing water, which reeds marked dry ground ahead, and which silences meant a predator was close. At his First Merge, he dissolved into the marsh's interconnected channels and received a water-memory older than the current age — a vast, undrained wetland stretching to every horizon, and a warning that each generation had seen it shrink. The memory gave him his purpose. He passed his Craft-Flow Trial not in a guild hall but by single-handedly rerouting a drainage channel that a land-development consortium had begun cutting through protected marsh. The Tide Tribunal upheld his intervention, and the Endless Marsh has had a named guardian ever since.
