Appearance
Physical: Ancient even by Ocearan standards, with a frame that has elongated slightly in the manner of those who spend extended time in deep-pressure environments; his skin is the deepest ocean-black with narrow bioluminescent silver lines that pulse irregularly, matching no known biological rhythm — they follow the pattern of the Leviathan Whale's song, a fact he has never explained.
Clothing: Robes of cured whale-membrane — taken only from natural deaths of elder leviathans — in deep grey-blue; he wears no tools, no weapons, and nothing made of coral that has been worked by hand.
Distinguishing Marks: When he speaks at full ritual projection, the silver lines on his skin synchronize and pulse together with a resonance audible below normal hearing; people near him report a sensation of deep-water immersion without being in water.
Relationships
- Deira Pearlcatcher - The Matriarch who sends him a formal greeting each season; he responds each time with a single carved shell bearing a pressure-glyph. The exchange has continued for eighty years and no one else knows what the glyphs mean.
- Syrith Coralwhisper - The Sonar-Singer whose investigation of the Undertide signal Aruven is aware of; he has chosen not to tell them what he knows because he is not yet certain they are asking the right question.
- Thalindra Deepcurrent - The High Hydromancer who has sent three formal requests for a Council audience over sixty years; he has declined them all, politely, with the same reply: not yet.

Backstory
Aruven first descended to the Shrine at forty-seven as a junior priest-candidate, expecting a ceremonial role. He returned three months later fundamentally altered, having achieved a Leviathan communion that the previous Keeper had failed to complete in sixty years of attempting. The elder whale he communed with — the one the Founding Myth identifies as the origin of the Sleeping Whale legend — is not sleeping. Aruven has known this for two hundred and thirty years. He has spent that time learning to translate what it is saying. He is not finished, and the whale is patient. He has never told the Council of Tides what he is learning, because he does not yet have the right language for it.
Daily Life
Aruven descends to the Shrine's deepest communion chamber each morning to maintain the harmonic contact established over two centuries. Midday he surfaces to the Shrine's upper level to receive the handful of Priesthood novices assigned to his guidance. He composes in the afternoons — not music, exactly, but notation systems for sounds that Pelagic Glyph was not designed to capture. He eats what the Shrine's deep-current ecology provides and has long since stopped tracking which meal is which.
Secret
The elder Leviathan Whale beneath the Shrine has been communicating a sequence that Aruven has now fully translated. It is a warning, not about the Oceara, but addressed to whatever civilization comes after them. Aruven is not sure the Oceara are not already the after-civilization it was addressed to.
Story Hooks
- 1 Aruven sends word — through Deira Pearlcatcher — that he will receive visitors at the Shrine; when outsiders arrive, he tells them he has been expecting them for eleven years and asks if they brought the object he described in a letter sent to an address that does not exist.
- 2 The Leviathan beneath the Shrine has altered its song for the first time in recorded history; Aruven's communion chamber is now inaccessible, and the pressure at the Shrine's base is rising in a pattern no instrument can explain.
Narrative Value
Aruven is the cosmic oracle — a character who has access to knowledge that operates at a civilizational or mythological scale, but communicates it on his own timeline and by his own logic. He is a source of revelations that require interpretation, making him invaluable for campaigns with deep lore stakes.
