Appearance

Physical: Young and still growing into a Pyrakian's full frame, with ember-red skin unmarked by major forge accidents — an achievement he is simultaneously proud of and knows marks him as inexperienced to veteran smiths. His flame-orange hair is kept tied back and frequently singed at loose ends. Amber eyes that catch fire in the literal sense when he concentrates, flaring briefly gold before he notices and damps them down.

Clothing: Standard apprentice forge-apron of Lava-Turtle shell-plate over an Ember-Weave tunic, both newer than anything worn by the senior smiths. He carries a personal set of Ember-Chisels he commissioned himself using his first pay allocation.

Distinguishing Marks: A fresh burn scar across his left collarbone from his first solo tempering attempt, and ink-dark fingertips from excessive rune-practice on spare metal scraps.

Relationships

  • Forge-Master Gorath Ironblood - Master and most demanding critic; Drev would perform any task Gorath assigned without question, and is simultaneously the only apprentice who argues back when he believes Gorath is wrong
  • Apprentice Sera Ironmark - His primary competitor among the senior apprentices — their rivalry is entirely professional, largely respectful, and according to both of them, deeply motivating
  • Mira Cinderveil - His mother's trade associate and the person who first pressed a secondhand metallurgy text into his hands when he was twelve; she checks in on his progress with proprietary pride he finds slightly embarrassing

Personality

  • Traits: Intensely curious to the point of attempting things before fully understanding them, openly competitive with the other senior apprentices while concealing a deep fear that he was admitted to the Crucible on potential rather than merit
  • Mannerisms: Asks follow-up questions rapidly enough to seem rude until listeners realize he is absorbing rather than challenging; sketches forge diagrams on any available surface when thinking through a problem
  • Voice: Eager and slightly too fast, with a tendency to lower volume when stating something he is not certain of

Backstory

Drev was born to a family with no forge lineage — his mother is a Cinder-Watch patrol officer and his father trades volcanic spices in the Basalt Agora. He taught himself basic metallurgy from discarded Forge-School texts purchased secondhand at the Cinder Fair and presented himself at the Crucible at eighteen with a self-forged obsidian blade as his entry credentials. The blade was imperfect in three measurable ways that would have disqualified any Forge-School candidate. Gorath Ironblood personally inspected it and admitted Drev on the spot, saying the imperfections showed exactly where his instinct had overridden his technique, which was the correct direction of error. The other apprentices resented the irregular entry for approximately six months before Drev's output made resentment unsustainable. He is currently Gorath's most demanding project and his most guarded pride.

Daily Life

Drev works longer hours than any other apprentice because he arrives before the forges are lit and stays until the last master leaves. His mornings are assigned work under a senior smith's supervision; afternoons are personal practice time he mostly spends running unauthorized experiments that he logs carefully and shows Gorath only when they succeed. He eats his meals at the forge bench and participates in the evening Hearth-Song with visible self-consciousness, having grown up in a non-traditional household where the formal rituals were observed but not central.

Secret

Drev has, on three separate occasions, succeeded in forging a small object — a disc, a ring, a blade fragment — that sustained heat without any geothermal or pyromantic energy source. He does not understand how. He has destroyed all three objects out of fear that they represent a violation of the Balance Charter, but he cannot stop replicating the result. He has written the method in a cipher only he can read in the back of his personal logbook.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Drev approaches outsiders in desperation after his personal logbook goes missing during a routine Crucible inspection — whoever took it now has partial access to a self-sustaining heat method he cannot explain and cannot let the wrong party weaponize
  • 2 He quietly offers to use his unauthorized heat-sustaining method to assist a mission that requires a forge-fire in a location with no volcanic source — but only if the players agree to help him understand what he is actually doing before he continues

Narrative Value

Drev represents the next generation of Pyrakian craft and the possibility of a fundamental breakthrough in fire magic. His youth and irregular background make him accessible to outsiders in a way senior masters are not, and his secret discovery creates a plotline with civilization-altering potential.
