Appearance

Physical: Tall and still carrying the build of someone who was once trained for the Inferno Trial — not a soldier's build but the controlled, precise musculature of an advanced pyromancer. His ember-red skin has the deep tone of someone who once spent years near the Crucible's primary forges. His amber eyes are sharp and habitually evaluating. Flame-orange hair, once kept in the formal candidate's style, now worn loose in a manner that reads as deliberate informality.

Clothing: Civilian clothes of notably good quality for the district — he has money and no particular context for it anymore. He wears no insignia, which is itself a statement in a civilization where most adults carry some affiliation mark.

Distinguishing Marks: The absence of the Cinder Crown he was expected to receive is not visible, but his bearing makes the lack of it conspicuous to anyone who knows what to look for.

Relationships

  • First Pyro-Archon Pyranthis Ashveil - She would have been his equal on the Council; she is aware of this and he is aware that she is aware; they have a distant professional courtesy that does not acknowledge the parallel
  • Tutoring client Essa Emberseed - A young woman preparing for her mid-level pyromantic license who reminded him at their first session, in a way he cannot account for, of why he walked into the lava river the first time; he has been her tutor for eight months with a care he does not apply to his other clients
  • Former fellow candidate Shan Cinderset - One of the other Trial candidates from Vok's cohort, who passed and now holds a junior Council advisory position; they share a meal every two months in which neither of them mentions the Trial directly and both of them do constantly

Backstory

Vok was the Flame-Council's most anticipated Pyro-Archon candidate in a generation, selected for the Inferno Trial at sixty-two with the highest assessed pyromantic capacity in thirty years. He walked the lava river. He failed — not because he was overwhelmed but because at the river's midpoint he stopped, turned to observe something in the lava behind him, and stood still long enough to accrue the time penalty that disqualified his passage. He was asked what he had stopped to observe. He said he did not know. He was offered a second attempt in the next Inferno Season and declined. He has never explained why to anyone's satisfaction, and forty years later the Council's files still carry the notation that he remains theoretically eligible for reconsideration.

Daily Life

Vok lives on the income from a small private pyromancy tutoring practice — clients who want preparation for lower-level pyromantic licensing, not Inferno Trial candidates. He takes no Trial-preparation clients. His mornings are free. He spends them in the Basalt Agora reading the Ash-Glyph network news tablets with the attention of someone who spent decades in proximity to the decisions being reported. Afternoons he teaches. Evenings he is at home, and what he does there he does not discuss.

Secret

What Vok stopped to observe in the lava river was not an anomaly. It was absence — a section of the river where the lava moved in a pattern that should have been pyromantically impossible, as though something was drawing it toward a point below the river bed. He stopped because the pattern matched something in the Cinder Codex that he had always read as metaphor. When he saw it was not metaphor, he could not continue. He declined the second attempt because he did not believe he was the right person to bring what he had seen to the Flame-Council's attention. He has been waiting for the right person since.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Vok approaches travelers with pyromantic knowledge quietly, through an intermediary — a message delivered by Essa — asking whether they would be willing to consult on a pyromantic observation he made forty years ago that he needs to determine is either still relevant or finally resolved
  • 2 Essa tells travelers that her tutor asked her to bring them to him after she described their conversation about volcanic anomalies; she does not know what he wants to discuss but his manner when he asked was unlike anything she has seen from him in eight months

Narrative Value

Vok is the forty-year keeper of a secret that changes the meaning of the Inferno Trial. His failure is not a failure but a recognition, and the thing he saw connects the Trial's lava river to the same underground anomalies that Drak's drake detected and Vrathek found encoded in the Cinder Gate. He is the character who has the longest relationship with the central mystery.
