Appearance

Physical: The youngest Talamhari NPC currently in Ministry service, and visibly so — her skin has the warm saturation of an earthen-brown that hasn't yet been modulated by decades of underground work, her mineral tattoos the vivid cobalt-blue of a fresh application. She moves with the energy expenditure of someone who has not yet learned to conserve it.

Clothing: Wears the pale stone-gray apprentice uniform of the Ministry of Stone-Lore with increasing evidence of personal modification — additional inscription-medium pockets added to the sleeves, the hem hem-stitched in a crystal-mosaic geometric pattern she designed herself.

Distinguishing Marks: Her rune-inscription work has a visual symmetry that senior practitioners attribute to her design background; when she is thinking about a rune-array problem, she draws it in the air with one finger without being aware she is doing it.

Relationships

  • Ossa Crystalkeep - Crystal-Beetle tender who gave her an open invitation to revisit the beetle warrens after she spent three hours asking questions on an errand run; the only adult professional relationship she has developed entirely on her own initiative rather than through Ministry assignment
  • Talvek Deepread - Chief Stone-Scribe who gave her archive access after a notably engaging afternoon of questions; she does not know he considers her one of three students in forty years who asked the right things, because he has not said so
  • Maera Runeweave - Her assigned supervising Rune-Weaver, whose technical precision she tries to emulate and occasionally inadvertently surpasses in specific narrow domains, which she handles carefully and Maera handles with more grace than Sethka initially expected

Personality

  • Traits: Deeply enthusiastic about everything connected to her work and genuinely curious about everything not connected to it; has not yet encountered the institutional frustrations that temper long-term practitioners, which makes her currently the most energetic person in any room she occupies and occasionally the most exhausting
  • Mannerisms: Takes notes in a hybrid notation system she developed herself — standard Granite Tongue glyph-script combined with the geometric shorthand she used in crystal mosaic design — that no one else in her cohort can read; tends to finish other people's sentences when she can predict the direction, which she is working on
  • Voice: Higher-pitched than most Talamhari, quick in pace, with a quality of genuine interest in the response to any question she asks that makes even routine interactions feel like conversations she wanted to have

Backstory

Sethka is the youngest practitioner in the current Heartforge Rune-Weaver apprentice cohort and the only one from an artistic background — she spent six years studying crystal mosaic design before a supervising artist recognized that her preferred geometric patterns were structurally identical to load-bearing runic arrays. The referral to the Ministry of Stone-Lore changed her career. In her third apprenticeship year she is already producing rune-inscription work with visual precision that senior practitioners attribute to her design training. She is deeply enthusiastic about everything and has not yet encountered the institutional frustrations that will, in time, temper this quality.

Daily Life

Sethka's days follow the apprentice cohort schedule: supervised inscription practice in the morning workshop, technical lectures and Granite Codex study through midday, and supervised independent project work in the afternoon. She consistently works past the official end of the apprentice day, which her supervising practitioner has given up trying to prevent. She spends her free evenings in the Echoing Halls, where Talvek Deepread has given her a standing open-visit arrangement after she spent a full afternoon asking questions about resonance-indexing that he described, privately, as the first genuinely interesting questions he had received from someone under a century old.

Secret

Sethka has been drawing the same rune-array in her private sketchbook for three weeks without knowing why — a geometric pattern that emerged when she was half-awake one morning and that she cannot stop developing and refining. She has shown it to no one because she cannot explain its origin, and Ministry protocol requires all independent inscription work to be disclosed to supervising practitioners. What she does not yet know is that the pattern is a perfect structural diagram of the formation Varris Deepkeel found in the deep gallery and that Karm Ironhum sealed from above — a pattern she has never seen in any text or archive because no text or archive has it. She arrived at it through the geometry of her design training interacting with something she absorbed from three weeks of archive visits.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Sethka approaches the party in a moment of genuine alarm — she has found, in the archive section Talvek gave her access to, a fragment glyph that matches a portion of her private sketchbook pattern, which means either she inadvertently copied something she saw and forgot, or she generated something the archive contains a fragment of; she needs help determining which
  • 2 Her training cohort's midterm evaluation requires each apprentice to produce an original load-bearing rune array under supervised conditions; the array Sethka produces during the evaluation is structurally identical to one that Gorrath Deepvein recognizes from his sealed tectonic reports, and he interrupts the evaluation to speak with her privately

Narrative Value

Sethka is the discovery engine — the youngest and most curious consciousness in the civilization, who has independently arrived at knowledge that the oldest and most guarded NPCs have been protecting or suppressing. Her design-trained geometric intuition provides a non-geomantic path to the mystery's core, and her institutional innocence makes her the character most likely to accidentally expose the entire concealed structure of what the other NPCs have been carefully managing.
