The Resonance Shard, Fragment of the Conclave

SOLANTHAS serves as The Resonance Shard, Fragment of the Conclave within The Celestials. SOLANTHAS is identified as Resonance Shard. Primary residence: Quell-Spitzen. Commonly described traits include Traits: Experiences the world through what they call 'the shared memory' — simultaneous partial awareness of all five Celestial domains without being fully fluent in any of them, which produces an unusual perspectival richness and an occasional sensory overload they manage through extended periods of silence at the Quell-Spitzen springs, Mannerisms: When referring to the five Celestials speaks of them in the first person plural, as 'we,' then corrects themselves to the third person, then often settles on a pause that implies the distinction may not be as clear as the grammar requires; unusually candid about uncertainty — never claims to know more than they do, and Voice: Produces sound through crystal vibration rather than biological vocal cords, giving their speech an overtone-rich, faintly musical quality that can be hard to locate in space — it appears to arrive from multiple points simultaneously.

Resonance Shard Age: 5000 Non-binary

Appearance

Physical: Solanthas manifests as a humanoid figure of approximately mortal height — unusual among Celestial-adjacent beings — composed entirely of interlocking Celestial Crystal fragments that have fused into a coherent shape over five millennia. The crystal is clear at the extremities and increasingly dense, multi-coloured, and luminous at the chest, where five distinct hues cycle through each other in the pattern of the five domains: silver, violet, amber, gold, teal. The overall impression is of a person made from a shattered window that decided to reassemble itself, beautifully, into something that was not a window.

Movement: Solanthas produces a persistent crystalline ringing sound when moving, faint but omnipresent, like the sound a wine glass makes when its rim is touched. This is not voluntary and cannot be suppressed.

Distinguishing Marks: When Solanthas is agitated, the crystal comprising their body develops internal fracture lines that glow and then heal within seconds; in calm states these fractures are invisible; scholars who have studied Solanthas up close have documented that the number of visible fractures at any given moment appears to correlate precisely with the distance to the nearest Entropic Rift.

Relationships

  • The Five Celestials - The relationship that Solanthas finds hardest to articulate; they carry resonance-memories of existing as part of the Conclave's combined essence, which means they simultaneously remember being Chronos, Aether, Terra, Pyrope, and Nous without having ever been any of them as individuals — a relationship with the Five that the Five themselves find philosophically complex enough that formal recognition has been deferred for five thousand years
  • Quell-Spitzen Hospice Healers - The only mortals with whom Solanthas has maintained continuous relationships across multiple generations; three successive families of Quell-Spitzen healers have each had a member who served as Solanthas' primary interlocutor, and Solanthas carries the resonance-memory of each of them with a clarity the healers find both touching and slightly unnerving
  • High Resonant Seraphiel - A relationship of mutual professional caution; Seraphiel respects Solanthas' unique nature but is uncertain how to classify them institutionally; Solanthas respects Seraphiel's genuine wisdom while being direct about finding the Order's thirty-seven inconclusive studies a somewhat poor use of everyone's time

Backstory

During the Great Dissonance — the cataclysm caused by the mortal cabal known as the Architects of the Rift extracting raw Celestial energy — the Five committed a portion of their combined essence to seal the Entropic Rift. The sacrifice created a compression shock that shattered the Resonance Field locally and scattered fragments of pure Celestial resonance across a wide area. Most of these fragments dissipated within decades. One, caught in an updraft of Starlight energy above the Quell-Spitzen springs, was held aloft in a state of coherent potential for over a thousand years while the world below it healed. Then it began to crystallise. The crystallisation took three centuries. The resulting structure had, when it settled to the ground at the source springs, a shape that the Quell-Spitzen Hospice's healers initially took for a fallen pillar. When it stood up and asked them what the date was, they required a full day to compose a response. Solanthas has been at the Quell-Spitzen for approximately five thousand years, during which the Celestial Order has conducted thirty-seven formal studies of their nature and arrived at thirty-seven different conclusions.

Daily Life

Solanthas spends most of their time partially submerged in the Quell-Spitzen source springs, which carry the highest concentration of pure Starlight energy anywhere accessible to non-Celestial beings. The springs' energy passes through Solanthas' crystal body in a constant low-level resonance that they describe as 'maintenance' and the hospice healers have documented as significantly amplifying the therapeutic properties of the water for the three days following each session. Solanthas also speaks to pilgrims on the Path of the First Creation, though their schedule is determined entirely by their own readiness rather than the pilgrims' arrival. They have been known to wait silently for a specific pilgrim for months, then speak for six hours to that pilgrim and say nothing to anyone else for a year.

Secret

Solanthas knows what the Architects of the Rift were trying to do and why. The shared memory they carry includes the resonance-impression of the moment of the Dissonance from the Celestials' perspective — and in that impression, the Architects' purpose is clear in a way that the official history, which reduced them to a cautionary tale, obscures. The Architects were not seeking power. They were seeking to accelerate the evolution of mortal consciousness toward the threshold Nous planted in the Mystaran unconscious — trying to help, catastrophically, using methods they did not understand. Solanthas has determined that sharing this information would rewrite the Order's foundational morality tale, destabilise the Balancing Edict's authority, and potentially justify the very extraction methods that nearly destroyed the world. They have chosen silence, and they are not entirely certain it is the right choice.

Story Hooks

  • 1 A pilgrim arrives at Quell-Spitzen carrying a fragment of Celestial Crystal that produces a resonance identical to Solanthas' own when the two are brought within a metre of each other — a second shard, dormant for five thousand years, that has just woken up, and Solanthas greets it with an expression that the hospice healers have never seen on their face before: recognition
  • 2 The thirty-eighth study of Solanthas' nature, conducted by a Resonance Academy student young enough to ask the obvious question no senior scholar had thought to ask, produces a finding that requires the Order to either reclassify Solanthas as a Celestial with full Conclave standing or acknowledge that the category of 'Celestial' is less well-defined than five thousand years of institutional confidence has assumed

Narrative Value

Solanthas is the cosmological puzzle-piece — a being whose existence questions the definitional boundaries of the Celestials, whose knowledge of the Great Dissonance's true cause could rewrite the moral foundations of the Order, and whose ongoing presence at the Quell-Spitzen makes them the most consistently accessible non-human figure in the Celestials' sphere. They are ideal as a source of lore, a confessor for player-characters carrying difficult truths, and the pivot-point for campaigns that want to complicate the Order's official history.
