"I served for twenty years. I learned something I was not asked if I wanted to know. I left because I had not consented to the knowledge and I believe consent matters, including in relation to the divine."

Appearance
Physical: Vaelun is a Mystaran of one hundred and twenty-seven who carries their Oracle years in their appearance not as marks of divine presence but as the marks of divine absence. Their eyes were teal during the twenty years of Oracular service — the Nous-domain colour — and have been hazel since the rescission, but the teal appears briefly in conditions of strong Nous resonance, an involuntary physiological echo that they have never been able to fully suppress. They dress in the clothing of Mystaran civic life, having returned their Oracle vestments on the day of rescission.
Movement: Carries themselves with the ease of someone who knows exactly where they are at all times, which is the residual spatial-awareness of twenty years' intimacy with the Ætheric Net, and which coexists visibly with the deliberate presentness of someone who has chosen to be mortal again.
Distinguishing Marks: Sensitive beings in proximity to Vaelun report a faint Nous resonance — not the active resonance of an Oracle but the background tone of someone who was one — that Vaelun is aware of, cannot eliminate, and has decided to regard as a scar rather than a stigma.
Relationships
- Nous - The Celestial whose visions Vaelun carried for twenty years; the rescission ended the active channel but did not end the relationship, which Vaelun now describes as the background awareness that Nous exists and is observing without it being the central fact of their experience — a relationship they consider healthier than the one they had during the Oracle years
- Tessavane the All-Hearing Oracle - The colleague whose multi-domain sensitivity has continued for three centuries while Vaelun's single-domain sensitivity was voluntarily reduced; they have a relationship built on mutual respect for each other's choices about the same question, which they are each, apparently, still living through
- Mystaran Community - The people Vaelun has been fully present to for eighty-three years; they know Vaelun as a mediator, a neighbour, a person whose company is unusually grounding, and very few of them know about the twenty Oracle years, which is how Vaelun prefers it
Personality
- Traits: Has developed, in the seventy-seven years since rescission, a philosophy of presence-in-the-ordinary that is the deliberate inversion of Oracle consciousness — where Oracle perception expanded outward to cosmic scale, Vaelun has narrowed deliberately inward to immediate particularity; they find the specific texture of daily life more interesting than any cosmic vista and this is not a coping mechanism
- Mannerisms: Declines to interpret resonance patterns, dream-states, or synchronicities when others present them, not from inability but from a considered position that they left the interpretation role when they left the Oracle network, and that maintaining the boundary matters; will discuss the Oracle experience in the past tense with complete openness

Backstory
Vaelun received their first Nous-domain Oracle vision at twenty-four and served in the Oracle network for twenty years, developing a reputation for interpretive clarity that Nalindra Dawnweave's records — the Oracle Keeper at the time of Vaelun's service — describe as exceptional. At forty-four, Vaelun submitted a formal request for rescission of Oracle status. The Order had never received such a request. Three months of institutional discussion followed before the Circle of Five confirmed that an individual could not be Exiled from Oracle sensitivity but could be withdrawn from the network and released from the Oracular duties with the understanding that residual sensitivity would remain. The residual sensitivity did remain. Vaelun returned to Mystara and has lived an ordinary Mystaran life for eighty-three years, by choice, in full awareness of what they left.
Daily Life
Vaelun works as a Mystaran civic mediator — a role that their combination of Mystaran sensitivity, twenty years of Oracle training, and eighty-three years of ordinary life makes them unusually suited for. They mediate disputes, counsel individuals, and participate in Mystaran community governance with the same commitment they brought to the Oracle network, finding the scale more manageable and the feedback more immediate. They do not discuss their Oracle years with clients unless directly relevant. They correspond with Tessavane once per year on a date that changes annually in a way that neither has discussed but that both select by the same internal reasoning, and they have never attended a Celestial Order event since their departure.
Secret
Vaelun's reason for rescission was not the exhaustion, existential difficulty, or identity crisis that the Order assumed. They left because in their nineteenth year of service, during a routine Nous-domain vision, they saw with complete clarity what the Oracle network is for — not the purpose the Order believes it serves, but the actual purpose from Nous' perspective — and concluded that they did not want to participate in it without having been asked. The Oracle network, from Nous' perspective, is not a communication channel. It is something else entirely. Vaelun has spent eighty-three years deciding whether to tell anyone and has concluded that the person who needs to know is the current Oracle Keeper — but has not yet found the formulation that will not either dismiss the revelation or make it irreversible.
Story Hooks
- 1 Vaelun arrives at the Temple of the First Dawn for the first time in eighty-three years and requests a private meeting with Nalindra Dawnweave — not through the Oracle network's formal process but through a personal letter that arrives by ordinary messenger, written in the Oracle notation system that Nalindra only shared with her Oracles
- 2 A character in Mystara encounters Vaelun during a civic mediation session and is told, at the session's end, that the character's resonance state is identical to Vaelun's on the day they decided to rescind — and that Vaelun would like to discuss what that usually means
Narrative Value
Vaelun holds the question of what the Oracle network actually is from a perspective that has had eighty-three years to consider it — the most considered answer available to the most dangerous question about the Order's foundational institution. They are the character whose ordinary life conceals the most disruptive piece of knowledge in the current era.
