Appearance
Physical: Lyssa is young enough that her adult wing-span is only recently settled, and she carries herself with the slightly over-erect posture of someone compensating for recent growth. Her skin is a vivid sky-blue with gold undertones — unusual coloring attributed to her birth during a Solar-Soar at altitude. Her wings are a warm amber-brown, distinctly different from the common white or grey of most Aeriels.
Clothing: Wears standard Wing Guard recruit armor that fits poorly because she refused to wait for a custom fitting, eager to start active duty. A hand-painted Spiral Feather on the inside of her left vambrace, added without authorization, has been noticed and ignored by her commanding officer.
Distinguishing Marks: A cluster of freckle-like pigment marks along her right cheekbone — another unusual trait of altitude births — that darken when she uses aeromancy intensely.
Relationships
- Kaelvar Stormspike - She has never met him but has read every mission report he has filed that is available at her clearance level, and has formed strong opinions about his tactical decisions that she intends to share with him the moment she is introduced.
- Dravael Aerowright - The garrison's equipment specialist, who has begun saving her from her own unauthorized aeromantic experiments by quietly repairing the equipment she damages before the duty officer notices.

Backstory
Lyssa was born during a Solar-Soar ceremony and has been told her whole life that this makes her touched by Aeris — a claim she privately dismisses as superstition while secretly hoping it is true. Her family are Cloud-Masons of moderate standing; she is the first in three generations to enter the Wing Guard rather than the craft guilds. Her Rite of First Flight at thirteen produced the longest unassisted solo glide recorded at her Sky-Nursery in forty years. She joined the Wing Guard at the minimum eligible age, completed basic training with marks that alarmed the instructors with their inconsistency — exceptional in flight, mediocre in regulation, outstanding in aeromantic reflex, failing in chain-of-command comprehension. She has been assigned to the quietest posting on the Azure Rift while her instructors decide what to do with her.
Daily Life
Lyssa is the first recruit in the air each morning and the last to land each evening — she treats every patrol as personal flight training. Garrison duty bores her profoundly. She spends mandated rest periods practicing aeromantic techniques she has read about but not been formally taught, with inconsistent and occasionally alarming results. She writes letters home that substantially overstate the excitement of her posting.
Secret
During a night patrol six weeks ago, Lyssa glimpsed something in an updraft channel above her authorized altitude ceiling — a figure, winged but larger than any Aeriel, moving against the prevailing wind without apparent effort. She filed nothing because she has no idea what she saw and fears being grounded for hallucination assessment.
Story Hooks
- 1 Lyssa approaches outsiders at the garrison gate with a blunt request: she wants to know who they are and whether they are heading into the Rift, because she has information about an irregular updraft pattern that her commanding officer dismissed as instrument error — and she is willing to trade garrison access for someone taking her observation seriously.
- 2 A Wing Guard training exercise goes wrong and a group of recruits is stranded on a separated floating platform in deteriorating weather. Lyssa, off-duty and technically out of bounds, is the only one close enough to reach them — but doing so requires flying into an aeromantic phenomenon her training explicitly says no recruit should approach alone.
Narrative Value
Lyssa is the entry-point character for outsiders encountering Zephyrian military life — young enough to be curious rather than guarded, skilled enough to be genuinely useful, and operating outside the political awareness that makes most veteran NPCs careful with information. Her sighting of the unknown winged figure seeds a mystery thread that can connect to larger civilizational threats.
