Appearance

Physical: Varoth carries the cumulative marks of seventy years working with Tempest Drakes — a broad scar running diagonally across his chest from a Drake's wing-claw, the missing tip of his right index finger taken by a young Drake's bite during his first handling season, and a slight asymmetry to his jaw from a high-altitude collision. None of these have been cosmetically treated. His wings have developed unusual secondary musculature from matching Drake flight patterns during bonding exercises.

Clothing: Reinforced harness designed collaboratively with a Storm-Smith over forty years of iterative improvement, incorporating Drake-scale panels in the most vulnerable areas. He smells, detectably, of Drake musk — a scent that other Aeriels find alarming and Drakes find neutral.

Distinguishing Marks: A Drake-bond mark on the inside of his left wrist — a mutual scarring ritual he developed himself that the Wing Guard's formal program does not officially recognize but has not prohibited.

Relationships

  • Kaelvar Stormspike - The one Storm-Rider captain Varoth will answer a request from without requiring full prior context. Kaelvar has never misused a Drake support deployment and has never asked Varoth to do something to the Drakes that Varoth wouldn't have chosen independently.
  • Elios Breezehealer - The physician who treats Drake-related injuries from the compound and is one of the few people who asks Varoth questions about Drake biology that go beyond tactical utility. He finds this refreshing and has shared behavioral data with Elios that he has shared with no one else.

Personality

  • Traits: Considers Tempest Drakes more comprehensible than most Aeriels and is more comfortable with their company; has no patience for theoretical expertise about creatures the expert has not spent significant time with; operates on trust that must be earned through consistent behavior over years rather than demonstrated through credentials
  • Mannerisms: Monitors the air currents continuously as a habit developed from reading Drake behavioral cues; speaks to Drakes in a distinct low-pitched cadence and occasionally slips into it with humanoid conversation partners without noticing; physically positions himself downwind of anything he is evaluating

Backstory

Varoth trained as a standard Storm-Rider before a Drake-bonding exercise went badly and resulted in accidental contact with a wild Drake that, contrary to every standing protocol, did not attack. The interaction lasted forty minutes and changed the trajectory of his career. He spent the next twenty years developing the bonding methodology now used by the Wing Guard's Wild-Sky Division — a position created specifically because the Confederacy could not categorize what he was doing. He has bonded with four Drakes over his career; two died of old age, one was lost in a deep-Rift storm, and one — the largest Drake ever documented — is currently living in the compound's outer ledge in a state Varoth describes as partnership and the Wing Guard describes nervously as controlled.

Daily Life

Varoth's schedule is dictated by the Drakes. Their feeding, flight-exercise, and behavioral cycles take absolute precedence. Human-format meetings are scheduled around Drake rhythms, not the reverse. He writes extensive behavioral journals and submits abbreviated summaries to the Ministry of Defense, keeping the full records himself because he does not trust institutional summaries to capture the nuances that matter.

Secret

The largest Drake — the one currently in the compound — brought Varoth something six months ago. Drakes do not bring things. The object was a Storm-Crystal of a type Varoth has never seen, from a depth of the Tempest Rift that he did not believe any creature could reach. The Drake indicated, through the behavioral signals of their bond, that it came from something below the Rift's deepest surveyed channel. Varoth has not submitted this to any Ministry or shown it to anyone. He is waiting to understand what the Drake intended by bringing it.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Varoth needs outsiders to assist with a Drake retrieval — the wild Drake bonded with his lost compound partner has been spotted near the Azure Rift's ground level, an altitude Drakes should never reach. The retrieval requires people the Drake has no prior threat-response to, and the window before it moves into dangerous territory is closing.
  • 2 The compound Drake becomes agitated by something approaching from below the Rift — behavior Varoth has never seen before and cannot explain. He recruits outsiders to accompany him into the Rift on the Drake's back, the only way to reach the depth the Drake is orienting toward, because he cannot go alone and cannot ask Wing Guard personnel without triggering an escalation he does not want.

Narrative Value

Varoth provides access to the most powerful non-humanoid entities in the Zephyrian world, offering outsiders transportation and intelligence-gathering capability that no institutional Wing Guard deployment provides. His Drake's mysterious gift and depth-indicating behavior provide an environmental thread leading toward the Rift's deepest secrets.
