Whispering Orbs

Also known as: Orb Network, Crystal Communicators, Rune-Linked Spheres, Whispering Orb Network

Whispering Orbs are paired spheres of polished Living Crystal, each the size of a closed fist, housing a rune-inscribed resonance matrix that links the two objects regardless of distance or intervening rock. When a speaker holds one orb and projects their voice into it, the partnered orb reproduces that voice with uncanny clarity, and a trained operator can also transmit limited visual impressions as shifting light-patterns on the crystal surface. The Whispering Orb Network — a continental web of dozens of paired sets — connects every major Dwarven Hold and serves as the backbone of diplomatic communication with surface nations. Dwarven envoys of the Envoy-Forge carry portable orbs when traveling, and treaties are negotiated in real time across hundreds of kilometres of mountain rock. Their soft, breath-like hum when active gave rise to their name.

Origin
The first Whispering Orb pair was created during the Age of the First Forge by a Rune-Master of Clan Deepvein whose name the Chronicles record only as the Quiet Smith, a deliberate anonymity that scholars believe reflects the inventor's wish that the tool, not the craftsperson, be remembered. The Quiet Smith observed that two Living Crystal cores grown in contact with each other retained a harmonic link even after separation, and spent forty years learning to encode that link with voice-transmission runes.
Current Owner
Sets of Whispering Orbs are held by the Envoy-Forge, the Great Council of Iron, the Iron Guard's command tier, and the diplomatic delegations of allied nations including the Human Empire of Azaria and the Elven High Courts. The master set at the Hall of Echoes in Kragnir is maintained by the Warden of Trade.

History

The Whispering Orb Network was instrumental in coordinating the Dwarven defence during the Drakonian Siege of Baragorn, allowing High Thane Rokar to direct reinforcements in real time across four separate tunnel fronts. During the Arcane Overuse Crisis, the Network was used to broadcast emergency Runic Shutdown protocols to every active forge in the Holds within minutes, preventing what scholars estimate would have been a cascading Runic Corruption event affecting hundreds of thousands. The Neutral City of Galdur houses a permanent relay station jointly staffed by Dwarven and Elven technicians, cementing the Network's role in continental diplomacy. High Thane Borin Ironfist has proposed expanding the Network to include a permanent relay at the proposed joint Runic Monitoring Station.

Powers & Abilities

  • Voice Transmission: Transmits spoken words with perfect fidelity between paired orbs regardless of physical distance, functioning through solid rock, magical wards, and even moderate anti-scrying fields.
  • Visual Impression: A skilled operator can project blurred but recognisable images — faces, maps, written texts — as luminous patterns on the receiving orb's surface.
  • Network Relay: When three or more orbs are harmonically tuned, messages can be relayed across the full Whispering Orb Network, effectively broadcasting to all linked Holds simultaneously.
  • Sincerity Detection: The crystal faintly warms when the speaker is emotionally sincere and cools when deliberate falsehood is spoken, though this effect is subtle enough to miss without training.
  • Emergency Alert Pulse: A specific rune-sequence causes all network-linked orbs to emit a piercing chime audible across a Hold, used for catastrophic alerts such as cave-ins or enemy incursion.

Curse or Drawback

An orb whose paired partner is shattered during active transmission releases a resonance backlash into the holder's hands — a sharp, bone-deep vibration that can numb the fingers for days and, in documented cases of simultaneous hold at full transmission power, has cracked the bones of the palm entirely.
