Geography

Kragnir is carved deep into the Iron Mountains, its halls expanding across multiple subterranean tiers connected by the Steam-Lift Transport Network. Vast forge-chambers occupy the lowest thermal levels where geothermal heat is most intense, while residential warrens and market halls occupy the cooler mid-levels. The Hold is divided into Wardholds, each overseen by a Ward-Master who maintains a Runic Ledger of local resources.

Climate

Internally climate-controlled by the geothermal energy grid, with forge-districts running hot and humid while upper residential levels are kept at a comfortable warmth. The surface access points experience the full alpine severity of the Iron Mountains.

History

Kragnir is one of the oldest continuously inhabited Holds in the Ironpeak Range, its founding predating many of the formal structures of the Confederated Clan-Council. Its Thane has historically been a front-runner for the title of High Thane owing to the Hold's large population and resource wealth. Kragnir's trade caravans, escorted by Rune-Sentinels, have long been the primary conduit through which Aetherite and Adamantine flow to neighboring civilizations across Landorya.

Legend & Lore

It is said that when the first Thane of Kragnir struck the founding blow into the mountain's heart, the Iron Mountains themselves rang like a bell for three days and three nights, a sound heard as far as the surface settlements of the plains. Miners who delve too deep into the Hold's lowest thermal reaches sometimes report hearing that primordial strike echoing back through the rock, as though the mountain remembers. The legend holds that so long as the forges of Kragnir never go cold, the Hold cannot fall to any enemy; it is this belief that compels the Forge-Wardens to maintain at least one ember burning through even the darkest sieges. Scholars in the Book Quarter dispute whether this is myth or misremembered history, but no Thane has ever dared test the claim.

Life & Culture

Life in Kragnir is measured in the rhythm of hammer-strikes and the hiss of the Steam-Lift Network ferrying workers between tiers at all hours. Forge-crews rotate in eight-hour shifts across the scorching lower levels, their faces permanently ruddy from geothermal heat, while merchants and craftspeople fill the mid-level market halls with a ceaseless commerce in ore, finished ironwork, and alchemical reagents. Each Wardholdcelebrates a monthly Ledger Day, during which the Ward-Master reads aloud from the Runic Ledger and citizens account for their resource tallies, a ritual blending civic duty with communal feast, as families bring dishes prepared from whatever surplus the ward has earned. Children of the Hold are apprenticed young, assigned by aptitude to forge, scribe, or sentinel work, and the Climbing Academy in the upper warrens teaches the vertical navigation of Kragnir's towering shaft-stairways as a matter of basic survival.
