Crystal-Honey

Also known as: Aether-Honey, Firefly Gold

A thick, luminous substance of deep amber-gold color harvested from the crystalline hives that Aether-Fireflies construct inside hollow Aether Crystal nodes in Crystal-Glen. Unlike ordinary honey, Crystal-Honey is laced with dissolved crystal-dust from the fireflies' diet, giving it a faintly iridescent sheen and a sweetness with a sharp mineral aftertaste. When held to light it refracts into spinning prismatic patterns. In small quantities it is a prized Gnomish delicacy served at festivals and guild celebrations; in larger quantities it is a regulated alchemical reagent used by Crystal-Engravers to prime Aether Crystal surfaces before rune inscription, as it temporarily makes the crystalline lattice more receptive to magical etchings.

Crystal-Honey was first documented by the Guild of Gear-Biologists in the early Age of Enlightenment, when ecologist Mira Vaultgear noticed that Aether-Firefly swarms concentrated around fractured Aether Crystal nodes and sealed the breaks with their hive material. Experimentation revealed the alchemical properties of the secretion, and the Ministry of Resources established a sustainable harvesting program in Crystal-Glen that remains strictly overseen by the Order of the Green Gear.

Overview

Crystal-Honey is a uncommon alchemical substance in Landorya. Its known origin is Crystal-Honey was first documented by the Guild of Gear-Biologists in the early Age of Enlightenment, when ecologist Mira Vaultgear noticed that Aether-Firefly swarms concentrated around fractured Aether Crystal nodes and sealed the breaks with their hive material. Experimentation revealed the alchemical properties of the secretion, and the Ministry of Resources established a sustainable harvesting program in Crystal-Glen that remains strictly overseen by the Order of the Green Gear.. It is currently associated with Distributed; produced under license by certified Guild of Gear-Biologists harvesters and sold through guild-regulated markets. Its most cited abilities include Temporarily enhances Arcane Conductivity in Gnomes when consumed, making touch-based metal enchantments more potent for up to one hour, Applied to Aether Crystal surfaces, softens the crystalline lattice for up to thirty minutes, allowing finer and deeper rune inscription, and A drop added to Steam-Tea produces a mild stimulant effect that sharpens fine motor control and spatial reasoning. Accounts also warn of a drawback: Overconsumption — more than a few tablespoons in a single sitting — triggers Aether Intoxication: the victim perceives gear-patterns and resonance frequencies…

History

Crystal-Honey became controversial in Year 848 AE when a Chronomancer named Durvin Brasswheel was found to have consumed several jars of concentrated Crystal-Honey over a six-month period in an attempt to permanently amplify his Arcane Conductivity. His experiment produced a localized Arcane Overload event that destroyed his workshop and fused three of his fingers into a single gear-shaped mass. The incident prompted the Ministry of Arcane-Tech Integration to classify concentrated Crystal-Honey as a controlled alchemical substance, requiring a Guild license to purchase quantities above fifty grams.

Powers & Abilities

  • Temporarily enhances Arcane Conductivity in Gnomes when consumed, making touch-based metal enchantments more potent for up to one hour
  • Applied to Aether Crystal surfaces, softens the crystalline lattice for up to thirty minutes, allowing finer and deeper rune inscription
  • A drop added to Steam-Tea produces a mild stimulant effect that sharpens fine motor control and spatial reasoning
  • In sufficient concentration can seal hairline fractures in Aether Crystal by recrystallizing around the break

Curse or Drawback

Overconsumption — more than a few tablespoons in a single sitting — triggers Aether Intoxication: the victim perceives gear-patterns and resonance frequencies overlaid on all sensory input, becomes irrationally compelled to solve mechanical problems in their immediate environment, and loses interest in any non-mechanical activity for up to a day. Repeated overconsumption over weeks can create a permanent low-grade version of this state, rendering the Gnome socially impaired but extraordinarily productive in technical work.
