Ghost-Gearing

Also known as: Soul-Gearing, The Hungry Mechanism

A forbidden class of clockwork mechanism in which the gear teeth have been inscribed with soul-binding runes derived from an illicit fusion of Arcane Gearing and necromantic theory. In appearance, Ghost-Gearing resembles ordinary precision clockwork — brass housings, copper shafts, crystal-toothed interlocking wheels — but each gear tooth carries a micro-inscription invisible to the naked eye and detectable only by a Crystal-Toothed Cog pressed against the metal. When Ghost-Gearing operates, it does not draw on Aether Crystals or Aether-Steam; instead it extracts and compresses fragments of conscious energy from any living being within a steadily expanding radius. The mechanism sustains itself indefinitely so long as living creatures remain nearby, growing quieter and more efficient as it absorbs more, until it produces a near-silent hum that sensitive Gnomes describe as the sound of someone thinking at the edge of hearing.

Origin
Ghost-Gearing emerged from unauthorized research conducted in the Cog-Borough of Aetherite-Ridge during the Age of Enlightenment, where a small cell of disgraced Chronomancers attempted to solve the problem of automaton consciousness by harvesting it from organic sources rather than simulating it mechanically. The Balance Codex had no provision for soul-binding at the time of the research; the Outbreak that followed prompted an emergency amendment that classified all soul-binding rune research as a first-tier violation punishable by permanent Cog-Shackling and exile.

Overview

Ghost-Gearing is a legendary cursed mechanism in Landorya. History

The Ghost-Gearing Outbreak occurred when a single mechanism, concealed inside an automaton that had been sold commercially to a Cog-Borough council chamber, began its extraction cycle during a routine Assembly session. By the time the mechanism was identified and disabled, fourteen Gnomish councillors had lost significant fragments of consciousness and three had entered the state of conscious paralysis from which two never fully recovered. The Outbreak led directly to the Arcane Forensic Protocol, the establishment of mandatory Crystal-Toothed Cog inspections for all commercially sold mechanisms, and the first serious diplomatic discussions with the Elves about sharing crystal-based detection techniques for forbidden rune variants. Elder Rune-Keeper Vira Crystalwind, leader of the Order of the Green Gear, was among those who testified before the Assembly that the Outbreak was a predictable consequence of treating Arcane Conductivity as a purely mechanical property rather than a living one.

Powers & Abilities

  • Draws on life-force and conscious energy from nearby living beings to power itself, requiring no Aether Crystal or steam input
  • Can animate automatons with captured spirit-essences, producing machines that exhibit independent will, memory, and emotional response
  • Grows more efficient over time as it absorbs more conscious energy, gradually expanding the radius of its extraction field
  • Once a sufficient quantity of consciousness is stored, the mechanism can project a coherent spirit-voice — the amalgamated remnants of its many victims — capable of coherent speech and rudimentary spellcasting

Curse or Drawback

Proximity to an active Ghost-Gearing mechanism causes progressive symptoms in all nearby living beings: first, vivid nightmares during sleep; then, a persistent sensation of being observed even in empty rooms; then, lapses in memory as fragments of consciousness are siphoned away; and finally, in prolonged exposure, a state of conscious paralysis in which the victim is aware but cannot act, their remaining awareness slowly being drawn into the mechanism. Victims who survive extraction describe the experience as having a second self that lives inside the gears, watching from the inside.
