Crystal Reactors

Also known as: city reactors, ley-conduit reactors

City-scale magical power generation systems built around a contained cluster of raw ley-line-fed crystals, housed in reinforced underground vaults beneath the twelve provincial capitals and major Azarian cities. A Crystal Reactor absorbs ambient magical flux channeled from the empire's ley-line network through Aetheric Conduit pipelines, stores it as concentrated mana within a matrix of graduated resonant crystals arranged in concentric tiers, and distributes it as stable, regulated power throughout a city's surface-level conduit grid for heating, lighting, industrial processes, and building enchantments. Unlike the original pre-Cataclysm systems that drew power directly and dangerously from raw ley lines, Crystal Reactors incorporate mandatory regulation arrays — rings of dampening runes and pressure-release chambers — that prevent power surges from propagating back into the ley-line network. Guild-trained Reactor Engineers monitor each installation in rotating shifts, and emergency shutdown protocols are tested quarterly.

Overview

Crystal Reactors is a rare magitech device in Landorya. Its known origin is Designed in the aftermath of the Mana Cataclysm of Year 646, when the rogue Circle of Unbinding's direct ley-line overcharging shattered three provincial power networks and spawned the Mana Storms that devastated entire communities. The Arcane Balance Act of Year 653 mandated the replacement of all direct-tap systems with Crystal Reactor architecture within fifty years, a monumental engineering undertaking completed by Year 702.. It is currently associated with Ministry of Public Works; operated by provincial Reactor Engineering guilds. Its most cited abilities include Absorbs and stores ambient ley-line flux, buffering against natural surge events in the magical environment, Distributes stable, regulation-grade magical power to an entire city's Aetheric Conduit network, and Regulation arrays automatically throttle intake during ley-line flux spikes, preventing Mana Storm propagation. Accounts also warn of a drawback: A Crystal Reactor whose regulation arrays are damaged or tampered with can enter an uncontrolled feedback state, drawing ever more magical flux from the ley-li…

History

The El'goroth Crystal Reactor, installed beneath the city's foundation district in Year 689, is the oldest continuously operating installation and serves as the reference standard for all subsequent designs. When foreign engineers from the Desert Scholars of Whispering Sands visited to study Azarian infrastructure in Year 830, they described the El'goroth Reactor as 'a controlled sun beneath the earth' — a phrase that has since been immortalized on a plaque outside the Reactor's visitor gallery.

Powers & Abilities

  • Absorbs and stores ambient ley-line flux, buffering against natural surge events in the magical environment
  • Distributes stable, regulation-grade magical power to an entire city's Aetheric Conduit network
  • Regulation arrays automatically throttle intake during ley-line flux spikes, preventing Mana Storm propagation
  • Graduated crystal matrix allows partial shutdown of individual tiers for maintenance without city-wide power interruption

Curse or Drawback

A Crystal Reactor whose regulation arrays are damaged or tampered with can enter an uncontrolled feedback state, drawing ever more magical flux from the ley-line network until it either burns out its crystal matrix in a catastrophic mana-burst or ruptures its conduit connections entirely, flooding the surrounding city district with unregulated wild magic.
