Geography

Built into or atop basalt formations along the Iron-Vein Range, Orcish cities are typically tiered: the lowest tier houses mines and storage, the middle tier holds forges and workshops, and the uppermost tier contains the great hall, temples, and military command. This vertical organization allows rapid evacuation of non-combatants downward while warriors hold the heights.

Climate

The volcanic and geothermal activity beneath most Orcish city sites creates a perpetual warmth in the lower districts, while upper ramparts face the full force of Iron-Vein Range storms. Forge-heat vented through basalt chimneys warms the middle tiers and is carefully regulated by Vent-Tenders to prevent structural fatigue in the runic lattices.

History

The Orcish city as a form emerged during the Runic Age when the first Stone-Keepers realized that dispersed clan camps could not protect newly developed siege-engine technology from rivals. The first true fortified cities consolidated multiple clans under a single Chieftain's authority, creating the Clan Confederation model that endures today. The great cities of Kragthar Hold and Gor-Mok Forge-Citadel stand as the apex of this tradition, and their architectural templates have been replicated by every major clan in the Iron-Vein Range.

Legend & Lore

The Orcs say that Gor-Mok himself laid the first stone of the first city with the flat of his mythic hammer, and that the impact drove the stone so deep it touched the earth's iron core, anchoring the city to the bones of the world. Shamans still perform a yearly Sounding — driving an iron rod into the bedrock of each city — to listen for the deep resonance that proves the city's stone-roots still hold.

Life & Culture

Life within an Orcish city moves to the rhythm of forge-shifts and war-drills. Dawn brings the Stone-Cleansing ritual — the communal washing of tools at the forge-court fountain — followed by Stone-Stew and the morning War-Chant. By midday the forge quarter roars with heat and hammer-ring, while the war-yard sees squads cycling through siege-engine drills. Evenings fill the great hall with feasting and recitation of the day's deeds, the Stone-Echo Drum marking the close of day.
