Geography
The River Clans territory stretches for approximately eighty kilometers along the lower Iron River, from the canyon exit near the Ash-Vein Plains to the broad estuary at Gortha's Landing. The land is flatter and more fertile than the highland clan territories, supporting grain cultivation and stone-bull herding in the floodplain fields. The region is naturally bounded by the canyon walls to the north and the forest margins of the Stone-Forest to the east.
Climate
The River Clans experience a milder climate than highland Orcs — less volcanic heat, more seasonal flooding, and considerably more precipitation. Spring flooding from the Iron Surge is both the region's primary hazard and its primary blessing, depositing iron-rich sediment that enriches the floodplain farmland. Winters are shorter and less severe than in the highlands, allowing year-round barge operation on the lower stretch.

History
The River Clans emerged as a distinct cultural grouping after the founding of Gortha's Landing in 1078 AR, when several clans chose to settle permanently along the river rather than return to highland territories after the initial trade-post construction. Over generations, these clans developed a more cosmopolitan character, interacting daily with Dwarven and Human merchants and absorbing elements of lowland trade culture while retaining the core tenets of Orcish honor and clan loyalty. The River Clans have historically served as mediators in highland-lowland disputes, leveraging their dual cultural fluency.
Legend & Lore
The River Clans maintain a tradition that the Iron River is alive and that it chose the founding clans by appearing in their chieftains' dreams, inviting them to settle its banks. Each River Clan chieftain performs the Rite of the River Voice upon assuming leadership — a night spent alone on the water in an unlit barge, listening for the river's counsel. Those who hear it are said to be granted an instinct for current and weather that no training can replicate.
Life & Culture
River Clan Orcs wake earlier than highland kin, the dawn barge departures setting the day's rhythm. Children learn to pole and navigate before they learn to swing a weapon, and wrestling matches between clans are held on barge decks rather than war-yards. The evening meal is almost always taken dockside, the setting sun painting the ochre river water as traders and pilots recount the day's cargo runs and the foreign gossip picked up at downriver ports.
