Geography
The Iron River originates at the glacier-fed lakes of the Ash-Vein Mountains, descending through the Rumble-Canyons where it cuts gorges up to a hundred meters deep. Below the canyon exit, the terrain flattens into the Ash-Vein Plains and the river slows, widening to over sixty meters and becoming fully navigable for Orcish barges as far upriver as the Gor-Mok Forge-Citadel docks. Its lower reaches pass through increasingly settled land, flanked by Iron-Roads, watch-towers, and the dockside warehouses of Gortha's Landing.
Climate
The upper reaches freeze solid in winter, halting barge traffic for two to three months. Spring thaw brings the Iron Surge — a rush of iron-laden meltwater that can raise the river's level by fifteen meters in the canyon section, an event celebrated as the Storm-Mother's annual forge-cooling. The lower navigable stretch remains open longer due to geothermal inputs from the Shattered Basin's springs.

History
The Iron River has been central to Orcish trade and logistics since the founding of Gortha's Landing in 1078 AR. Before that date, all heavy goods moved exclusively by road, a far slower and costlier process. The opening of river commerce transformed the Orcish economy and allowed Gor-Mok Forge-Citadel to scale its siege-engine production substantially. During the Sylvan Skirmishes, the river's canyon section served as a natural defensive barrier against Elven raids from the Stone-Forest.
Legend & Lore
Orcish river pilots swear that during the Iron Surge, a shape moves beneath the rust-red waters — a colossal serpent of iron scales whose passage churns the silt into the great ore-sediment plumes visible from the canyon rim. Stone-Keepers hold that this is the River-Spirit of Gor-Drak-Shan, the same force that guided the first Orcs to discover iron smelting, making its annual circuit to inspect the forges and docks that depend on its generosity. Fishermen leave small iron offerings in the water at the start of each navigation season.
Life & Culture
Barge-crews on the Iron River form a distinct social subculture within Orcish life — more solitary than forge-workers, more mobile than clan herders. They navigate by the iron-stain gradients on the canyon walls, read the surge-markers for water-level data, and maintain a guild-like structure under the authority of the River Clans. Their songs, called Tide-Chants, describe the river's moods in terms borrowed from the Orcish military lexicon, treating each current and shoal as an opponent to be outmaneuvered.
