Runic Shields

Also known as: Legion shields, enchanted shields, ward-shields

Standard-issue enchanted shields carried by the Runic Infantry of the Azarian Legions, each crafted from layered aetheric steel faced with crystal-infused stone and bearing on its inner surface a complex binding rune array inscribed by the Guild of Engineering's military armament division. The layered rune complex projects a secondary magical barrier approximately a handspan beyond the shield's physical surface, invisible to the naked eye but detectable as a faint resistance when probed magically. This external ward deflects not only physical blows with greater force than the steel alone could manage, but also absorbs and disperses the energy of incoming magical projectiles — elemental bolts, mana-burst rounds from enemy orbs, low-level curse-fragments — distributing the absorbed energy harmlessly along the crystal-threaded rim of the shield itself, which glows faintly amber for a moment after each magical impact. The shields are manufactured in batches of five hundred at the Ironforge Military Institute and issued to infantry cohorts at the Legate's discretion.

History

During the Crimson Campaign against the Necro-Cult of the Black Veil, Runic Shields proved critical in the Siege of Blackspire when the Cult deployed concentrated curse-barrage tactics against the Legion's advancing lines. Cohorts equipped with freshly renewed shields sustained forty percent fewer casualties than those whose renewal cycles had lapsed, a disparity that led directly to the post-campaign policy requiring mandatory renewal before every major engagement. The Dwarven Holds, allies of Azaria under the Coalition of the Sun, have requested the rune array specifications on three occasions; on each occasion the High Council has declined, citing strategic sensitivity.

Powers & Abilities

  • Projects an invisible secondary magical barrier beyond the shield's physical surface, increasing effective deflection area
  • Absorbs and disperses magical projectile energy through the crystal-threaded rim, rendering low-to-moderate magical attacks harmless
  • Ward can be renewed by a regimental enchanter in the field in under an hour using a standard-issue Renewal Kit
  • Crystal-infused stone facing provides enhanced resistance to fire-based attacks compared to plain steel

Curse or Drawback

A Runic Shield whose rune array has been damaged — by sustained magical bombardment or improper maintenance — does not merely lose its magical properties. The disrupted runes invert unpredictably, causing the shield to attract rather than repel incoming magical strikes for a brief period, a failure mode that Azarian Infantry drill sergeants call 'runic reversal' and train recruits to identify before it becomes fatal.
