Successive Ambassadors of the Waves have carried variants of this conch for as long as Nereid oral tradition records, and the Tide-Readers' song-cycles credit it with turning the tide, literally and figuratively, in at least four major coastal conflicts between surface nations. The current conch bears eleven pearls, representing eleven negotiated settlements, and was last raised publicly when the Ambassador mediated a trade dispute between a northern maritime kingdom and a Drakonian-allied coastal city-state threatening to ignite a broader war.
