Pressure-Crystal Furnaces
Also known as: Vent Furnaces, Crystal Forges
Pressure-Crystal Furnaces are massive fixed installations anchored above deep-sea geothermal vents within Ocearan citadels, their bodies built from pressure-hardened coral and nacre-laced alloy framing that can withstand the crushing weight of full ocean depth. At the core of each furnace sits a lattice of mature pressure-crystals positioned to focus and amplify the vent's superheated discharge into a stable, controllable working heat, enabling metalwork, glass-blowing, and alchemical reduction far beyond what surface forges could achieve.

History
At the height of the Ocearan Confederation, dozens of Pressure-Crystal Furnaces operated across the deep-sea citadels, producing the Pearl-Steel, bioluminescent glass, and pressure-forged trident-spears that defined Ocearan material culture and underpinned its export economy. The furnaces were the industrial heart of Ocearan civilization, and control of the geothermal vent fields they depended on was the direct cause of the long-standing trade rivalry with the Pyrakians, who sought the same volcanic-oceanic boundary zones for their own surface-adjacent forges. After the Ocearan decline, the majority of the furnaces were either destroyed in the tectonic upheavals that followed the civilization's fall or deliberately disassembled and their crystals dispersed to prevent the technology from being weaponized by successor cultures.
Powers & Abilities
- ✦ Harnesses raw geothermal vent energy and converts it into controlled high-temperature heat for forging
- ✦ The crystal lattice amplifies vent output by an estimated threefold, reaching temperatures sufficient to smelt rare deep-sea trench minerals unreachable by ordinary fire
- ✦ Embedded sea-rune arrays allow Pressure-Smiths to modulate temperature with precision by adjusting the resonance angle of individual crystals
- ✦ The furnace housing absorbs and redistributes ambient ocean pressure, protecting craftspeople from the crushing environment outside the citadel walls
- ✦ Waste heat is channeled into secondary systems, powering citadel lighting and Tide-Pulse Generators
Curse or Drawback
A Pressure-Crystal Furnace whose crystal lattice fractures mid-operation releases its stored thermal and tidal energy simultaneously, producing an explosion of superheated pressurized water capable of destroying an entire citadel wing. The Ocearan Pressure-Smiths recorded nineteen such catastrophic failures across their civilization's history, each entering the Cerulean Codex as a formal cautionary precedent.
