Overview

Caelum Drifter belongs to beast of burden in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Caelum Drifters inhabit the broad mid-altitude wind corridors between the floating islands of Caelum, migrating seasonally along warm thermal lanes that connect the archipelago to the trade routes above Landorya's continents below.. The Caelum Drifter is the primary beast of burden and transport vessel of the Aeriels, serving as living cargo platforms for the heavy metals, grain, timber, and alchemical reagen… Key abilities include Internal gas bladder allows passive levitation without expenditure of physical effort, Can exhale directed bursts of compressed gas to accelerate, brake, or deflect projectiles, and Thick, layered skin resists cold, wind abrasion, and minor magical energies.

Appearance

The Caelum Drifter is a vast, whale-like creature whose body is encased in smooth, pale-grey skin stretched over an internal gas-filled bladder that grants it near-effortless buoyancy at altitude. Its underbelly glows faintly with bioluminescent patches of cream and soft gold, and four broad, finlike limbs trail beneath it like banners in the wind, each tipped with hooked cartilage used to anchor against island rock faces.

Temperament

Placid and immensely patient, Caelum Drifters are social creatures that form slow, affectionate bonds with Aeriel handlers over years of shared sky-travel. They are non-aggressive unless their young are threatened, at which point they become formidably dangerous despite their gentle demeanor.

Abilities

  • Internal gas bladder allows passive levitation without expenditure of physical effort
  • Can exhale directed bursts of compressed gas to accelerate, brake, or deflect projectiles
  • Thick, layered skin resists cold, wind abrasion, and minor magical energies
  • Produces a low subsonic hum used for long-distance communication with other Drifters across island chains
  • Capable of sheltering smaller creatures or cargo in natural skin folds along its flanks

Lore

Aeriel legend holds that Caelum Drifters were once creatures of the deep ocean who climbed skyward over millennia by filling their bones with lighter-than-air breath gifted by an early wind deity. The Aeriels refer to them affectionately as Kaeluun, 'cloud-cattle' in old Caelari, and their handlers, called Driftmasters, are among the most well-traveled individuals in Aeriel society. Eldorian merchants who deal with the Aeriels sometimes ride Drifters under Aeriel supervision, an experience they describe as both terrifying and transcendent. The death of a bonded Drifter is mourned with a three-day sky-vigil, its bioluminescent patches harvested to make pigment for star-charts in its memory.

Role in the World

The Caelum Drifter is the primary beast of burden and transport vessel of the Aeriels, serving as living cargo platforms for the heavy metals, grain, timber, and alchemical reagents that Caelum must import. Without these creatures, the floating archipelago's dependence on ground-level imports would be logistically insurmountable.
