Overview

Feathered Serpent of the Upper Winds belongs to magical beast in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Feathered Serpents inhabit the extreme upper altitudes of Caelum's sky, coiling within the dense jet streams that circle the highest floating islands where no other large creature ventures willingly.. Appearance

This immense serpent stretches forty to sixty feet in length, its sinuous body covered in overlapping scales of deep midnight blue and iridescent silver that catch and fracture light like a mosaic of broken stars. Along its spine runs a continuous crest of long, quill-like feathers in pale gold and white that fan outward in threat displays, and its wedge-shaped head bears four forward-facing eyes of pale violet that glow faintly in low light.

Temperament

Solitary and deeply territorial, the Feathered Serpent of the Upper Winds treats all other aerial creatures, including Aeriels, as either rivals or prey depending on size and behavior. It is patient in its hunting, capable of shadowing a target for hours before striking with devastating speed.

Abilities

  • Rides high-altitude jet streams at extraordinary speed with minimal physical effort
  • Exhales a cone of razor-sharp frozen air crystals capable of shredding wing membranes
  • Feather crests generate aeromantic interference that muddles air magic cast in its vicinity
  • Hypnotic gaze from all four eyes simultaneously induces vertigo and spatial disorientation in flyers
  • Scales are impervious to mundane wind and cold, and highly resistant to aeromancy

Lore

Aeriel navigators have charted the migration corridors of the Feathered Serpents for generations, and this knowledge, jealously guarded, is among the most tactically sensitive information the Aether Council holds. An ancient account from a Star-Navigator named Vaelos Crimsontide describes a three-day pursuit by a Feathered Serpent across the full breadth of Caelum, surviving only by luring the creature through a Stormhawk nesting ground and letting the two apex predators exhaust each other. Civilizations below who occasionally see the creatures passing overhead at extreme altitude mistake them for comets or signs from gods, unknowingly accurate in their awe. The Aeriels do not hunt the Feathered Serpent, but a warrior who slays one alone is awarded the title Vael'kaen, 'sky-sworn', the highest martial honor in Caelum.

Role in the World

The Feathered Serpent occupies the apex of Caelum's high-altitude food chain and represents one of the most serious natural threats to Aeriel sky-travel and the Drifter trade routes. The Aeriels' Ministry of Sky Defense maintains dedicated Serpent-Watch patrols along known migration corridors.
