The Lumenwing is a slender, long-tailed bird barely larger than a crow, whose every feather is saturated with stored celestial light, making it appear at night as though a living constellation has taken wing. Its plumage cycles through cool silvers, deep violets, and warm gold depending on which celestial body is dominant in the sky above, and its eyes are pure white with no visible pupil.

Curious and bold, Lumenwings are drawn irresistibly to sources of magic and starlight. They are highly social within their flocks but can become anxious and erratic when kept in darkness for prolonged periods, cycling rapidly through distressed plumage colors.

The Aeriels believe that Lumenwings are fragments of the original starlight through which the Celestials first communicated their mandate to the sky-born people, that each bird carries a single frozen moment of that first cosmic message in the light it holds within. When a Lumenwing dies, its feathers are burned in a small ceremony called the Last Gleam, and the ash is mixed into ink used to inscribe the Aeriel's most important celestial observations. Traders from other civilizations occasionally acquire shed Lumenwing feathers through Aeriel merchants, prizing them as magical reagents, though the Aeriels strictly prohibit the live capture or trade of the birds themselves. It is said that an Archon whose Lumenwing companion dims without cause will not survive their term.
