Ashwing Bat

The Ashwing Bat is a large, leathery-winged creature with a wingspan of nearly two metres, its membranous wings the colour of cold volcanic ash streaked with faint orange veining. Its eyeless face is dominated by enormous heat-sensing pits and a wide, fang-lined maw permanently dusted with fine grey ash from the tunnels it roosts in.

Individually skittish and easily spooked, Ashwing Bats transform into a frenzied, coordinated swarm when threatened as a colony, filling tunnels with deafening sound and choking ash-spray. They are otherwise indifferent to other creatures, focused entirely on roosting and feeding.

Drakonian lore warns that when the Ashwing colonies abandon their roosts en masse and pour from the mountain vents in a great grey cloud, a catastrophic eruption is imminent, an omen called the Ash Exodus that has correctly preceded every major eruption in recorded Drakonian history.
