The lava tubes form an intricate labyrinth beneath the volcanic mountains of Drakon, ranging from narrow crawlways to enormous vaulted caverns large enough to house entire communities. Many tubes remain active conduits for lava flows, while older, cooled passages serve as thoroughfares and habitation spaces.

The interior climate of the tubes is intensely hot and humid with volcanic steam, though the thick rock walls insulate against the most extreme surface temperatures. The air is tinged with mineral vapors that Drakonians have adapted to tolerate over millennia.

THE DRAKONIANS have inhabited and expanded the lava tube networks since their earliest recorded history, carving settlements and forges deep into the earth to exploit the geothermal heat for their legendary metallurgical arts. The tubes have served as an unassailable refuge during periods of conflict with the Frostborn and the Sylvan Elves, giving the Drakonians a defensive advantage no surface army has ever overcome. Their deep knowledge of the underground passages is a closely guarded secret, shared with no outside civilization.

It is whispered among the Drakonian deep-workers that the oldest lava tube, a vast, uncharted corridor known only as the Firstblood Vein, was not carved by geological force but exhaled by the primordial dragon-ancestor Thyrakaan in a single dying breath, sealing his molten soul into the very walls. Those who press too deep into unmapped passages sometimes report hearing a slow, rhythmic rumble, like the heartbeat of something immeasurably large still slumbering beneath the stone. Smelters and miners who vanish in the deeper networks are said to have been "swallowed back", consumed by Thyrakaan to replenish his ancient fire. No Drakonian contradicts this tale lightly, for the walls of the deep tubes do, on occasion, run hotter than any known geothermal source can explain.

Daily life in the lava tube networks is governed by the rhythm of heat and flow, work gangs called Ashwardens rotate through active passages on strict timed shifts, reading the colour of the glowing veins to judge when a corridor must be evacuated before a fresh lava surge. The cooled elder-tubes hum with commerce and craft: mobile forge-carts trundle along smoothed basalt roads, merchants hawk sulfur-salts and iron blooms by the light of hanging ember-lanterns, and apprentice metallurgists undergo their trials by spending three consecutive nights alone in a junction chamber, learning to feel the earth's pulse through bare hands. Children born to tube-dwelling families are given a first name and a second gift, a small chip of cooled lava-glass from the passage nearest their birthplace, worn as a pendant for life to mark which vein of the great labyrinth they call home.
