Geography
The pass cuts through the Pyraxis Range at an elevation that is traversable year-round by caravans but sufficiently narrow and high to negate numerical advantages in any attacking force. The mountain walls flanking the pass are riddled with watch-galleries bored into the rock, connected by underground corridors that allow Stone Warden defenders to move between positions without exposure. The pass floor is reinforced with iron grates over deep pits that can be flooded with diverted volcanic runoff at the garrison commander's order.
Climate
Ironmaw Pass experiences the full brutality of mountain weather: biting cold and ice in winter, violent storms in spring and autumn, and ash-laden winds whenever Mount Pyraxis cycles toward an active phase. Stone Wardens are among the few Drakonian soldiers trained specifically for cold-weather operations, their earth-attuned magic allowing them to manipulate the stone walls of the pass for shelter and tactical advantage in any season.
Points of Interest
- 📍 The Iron Jaw Gate — a massive double-valved obsidian gate that can seal the pass in under sixty seconds, controlled from a concealed mechanism inside the mountain
- 📍 The Warden Redoubt — the primary garrison stronghold cut into the northern wall of the pass, housing the Stone Warden command and a reserve force
- 📍 The Passage Toll Registry — an ancient ledger-house where all caravans entering Drakon are inspected and taxed under Ministry of the Forge protocols
- 📍 The Battle-Notch Rampart — a crenellated stone wall blocking the pass mid-point, notorious for repelling the Frostborn assault of the prior century
- 📍 The Underground Reserve Magazine — a weapons and supply cache deep within the mountain designed to sustain the garrison for six months without resupply
History
The earliest fortifications at Ironmaw Pass date to the clan wars, when the fire and earth clans jointly held it against shadow clan raids. After unification, the Obsidian Order invested heavily in expanding the garrison into a full permanent fortress, recognizing that any enemy force wishing to strike the Drakonian heartland by land must first break Ironmaw or find no alternative route that does not add weeks of travel. Warbringer Thessara Cinderfang's famous lava-channel redirection tactic, now standard Stone Warden doctrine, was developed and first used here during the Frostborn border incursion.
Legend & Lore
The Stone Wardens keep a careful count of the marks carved into the Battle-Notch Rampart's inner face, one mark per year the pass has held without a single unauthorized crossing. Garrison lore holds that if the tally ever reaches a number ending in seven zeroes, the Iron Jaw Gate will open of its own accord and reveal a tunnel leading to a cache of weapons forged by Jormungandr himself. The current count is several thousand marks shy of that number, which the garrison takes as reason to maintain their vigilance without expectation of supernatural reward.
Life & Culture
The garrison at Ironmaw Pass is considered one of the most demanding postings in the Drakonian military, not because of the frequency of attack — most years see no military action at all — but because of the relentless discipline required to maintain peak readiness in isolation. Stone Wardens rotate through six-month tours, spending their days in equipment drills, geological study, and maintenance of the pass mechanisms. The toll-house officers who process civilian traffic develop an encyclopedic knowledge of Landoryan trade goods and are frequently recruited by the Ministry of the Forge for intelligence roles upon completing their service.
