Forgepeak occupies the broad eastern flank of Mount Pyraxis, its districts terraced into the slope in concentric rings of descending elevation. The lowest ring contains the great smelting halls and ore warehouses; the middle rings house the master smiths' workshops and apprentice forges; the upper ring is reserved for the Ministry of the Forge, the foundry academies, and the residences of the master craftsmen. Lava channels run in carefully maintained stone conduits through each tier, providing a constant supply of geothermal heat.

Forgepeak endures the harshest ambient conditions of any inhabited Drakonian city, with perpetual heat hazes rising from the smelting tier and ash-laden air that requires leather filtration masks for any visitor unaccustomed to volcanic atmosphere. Rainfall here takes the form of acidic drizzle that etches bare metals and is collected, neutralized, and repurposed for quenching baths.

Forgepeak predates the Obsidian Order itself, founded in an earlier age when rival elemental clans each maintained their own armament centers. After Korathyn Blackfire unified the clans, the city was designated the sole official production hub for weapons bearing the Drakonian seal, a status that transformed it from a settlement into an industrial metropolis within two generations. The Third Eruption War brought its greatest test, as Forgepeak's smiths maintained around-the-clock production throughout a three-month siege, supplying the Dragon Guard through subterranean supply tunnels when surface routes were cut off.

Forge-priests teach that Jormungandr himself once descended into the deepest furnace beneath Forgepeak and spent a season forging in secret. What he created was never found, but smiths working near the lowest chambers occasionally report hearing a second hammer strike slightly delayed behind their own, as if an unseen artisan works beside them in the dark. The bravest apprentices seek out these resonant spots deliberately, believing that mastering the rhythm of the phantom hammer grants them a touch of the forge-god's technique.

Forgepeak never sleeps. Its three work-shifts rotate through twenty-hour cycles timed not to the sun but to the volcanic venting schedule, which dictates when lava channels run hottest and production can proceed most efficiently. Master smiths command immense social prestige, their endorsements functioning as currency in both civic and military matters. Apprentices endure years of grueling training under strict Ministry oversight, and the annual Forge Festival draws competitors from every Drakonian city, each vying to demonstrate superior craftsmanship in public heats judged by the Master of the Forge herself.
