Overview

Earth-Serpent belongs to apex predator in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Earth-Serpents inhabit the Abyssal Zone at depths beyond 2,000 meters beneath the Iron Mountains, in the superheated cavern systems that even the Dwarven Holds' most ambitious excavations have never fully mapped.. Appearance

A colossal, semi-mythical serpent of the Abyssal Zone, said to stretch longer than a great hall and as wide around as a forge pillar, its scales fused plates of dark basalt and obsidian that grind audibly as it moves. Its eyes, those few survey teams who have seen them and returned, are described as twin pools of molten rock, casting a faint red illumination in the absolute darkness of the deepest tunnels.

Temperament

Earth-Serpents are described in Dwarven accounts as utterly indifferent to smaller life unless disturbed or cornered, moving through the Abyssal Zone with the slow inevitability of geological processes. When provoked, however, their aggression is catastrophic and seemingly without limit.

Abilities

  • Near-impenetrable basalt-fused scale armor resistant to conventional weapons
  • Generates intense localized heat capable of melting unprotected iron tools
  • Senses vibration and heat signatures through direct contact with rock surfaces
  • Can collapse tunnel sections by exerting pressure with its body mass
  • Semi-mythical resilience, conventional wounds appear to seal with cooling stone

Lore

In the oldest oral traditions of the Dwarven Holds, Earth-Serpents are not mere animals but fragments of the mountain's own being, given slow, terrible life by the accumulated heat and pressure of ages. The Runic Order of the Deep maintains sealed records in the Vault of Echoes documenting three confirmed encounters across Dwarven history, each resulting in significant casualties and the permanent sealing of the tunnels involved. It is whispered that the deepest sealed gate in Kragnir, known as the Ashen Door, was closed after an Earth-Serpent surfaced into the lower forge levels during a catastrophic vent eruption three centuries ago. No other civilization of Landorya has ever encountered one and recorded a coherent account.

Role in the World

The Dwarves of the Iron Mountains regard Earth-Serpents as the ultimate boundary-keepers of the Abyssal Zone, creatures whose presence effectively marks the limit of safe expansion downward. Only Rune-Sentinels equipped with specialized deep-warding runes are sanctioned to operate near confirmed Earth-Serpent territories, and the creatures are never hunted.
