Overview
Glow-Moth belongs to ecological keystone in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Glow-Moth colonies thrive along moisture corridors of the Mid-Depth Zone and breed exclusively within Crystal Gardens, with the largest colonies found near the Luminara Grotto beneath Baragorn.. Appearance
A large moth with a wingspan reaching the breadth of two Dwarven hands, its wings patterned in concentric rings of pale blue, ghostly white, and deep indigo that emit a soft, steady bioluminescence. Its body is densely furred in silver-white down, and its antennae are long and feathery, perfectly attuned to the faint vibrations of crystal formations.
Temperament
Glow-Moths are entirely docile and utterly indifferent to Dwarven presence, drifting through cavern corridors in slow, unhurried spirals. They are drawn irresistibly to Living Crystal formations and will abandon any space where crystals are over-harvested.
Abilities
- • Sustained bioluminescent glow sufficient to light a narrow corridor
- • Breeds exclusively in Crystal Garden environments rich in Living Crystal energy
- • Antennae sense subtle magical resonance in crystal formations
- • Cocoon silk is faintly conductive and prized for runic applications
- • Colonies self-regulate population through pheromone cycles tied to crystal growth rates
Lore
The Dwarves of the Iron Mountains consider the extinction of a Glow-Moth colony in any given section of the Holds to be an omen of spiritual and ecological imbalance, a sign that the crystal veins are depleted or that the mountain's harmony has been disrupted. The Runic Order of the Deep once spent seven years researching a colony collapse in the Vault of Echoes, ultimately concluding it had been caused by unauthorized crystal harvesting by a rogue merchant. That merchant was exiled permanently from all Dwarven Holds. Elven naturalists who have been permitted to study the moths describe their collective glow as 'the stars the Dwarves carry underground.'
Role in the World
For the Dwarves of the Iron Mountains, Glow-Moths are both a natural light source in the Mid-Depth and Deep Zones of the Holds and a vital ecological indicator of Crystal Garden health. Stone-Shepherds are specifically tasked with tending Glow-Moth colonies, ensuring their populations remain stable and the corridors of the Holds stay illuminated.
