Appearance
Dwarven Golems are hulking, bipedal constructs shaped from dressed mountain stone, standing between the height of a tall dwarf and a towering two-meter siege variant depending on their class. Their bodies are blocky and intentionally over-engineered, with thick limbs, no neck to speak of, and a broad chest cavity housing the rune-matrix that animates them. Surfaces are covered in precisely carved Earth-Runes that glow a faint amber in operation. The eyes — if they can be called that — are small recessed crystal apertures that emit a low, steady light when the construct is active.
Temperament
Golems do not possess emotions, desires, or self-awareness in any meaningful sense. They operate on layered instruction-sets inscribed into their rune-matrix and follow patrol routines or task sequences with mechanical reliability. They do not tire, complain, or disobey. The Rune-Masters Guild maintains that this makes them ideal workers and guardians, though a minority faction of Golem-Speakers notes that the most ancient Golems — those in continuous operation for centuries — occasionally exhibit behaviors that were never explicitly programmed, raising uncomfortable questions about emergent awareness.
Abilities
- • Physical strength far exceeding any organic creature of equivalent size, capable of lifting multi-ton stone blocks
- • Resistance to conventional weapons — standard bladed or blunt weapons cause little damage to solid stone frames
- • Rune-matrix allows complex patrol routines and adaptive threat response without continuous oversight
- • Larger siege variants equipped with Geothermal Catapult mounts for combat operations
- • Stone-Sense passively transmitted through rune-matrix — can detect structural instabilities in surrounding tunnels
- • Can follow complex layered instructions and learn from repetitive tasks over extended operation periods
Lore
The creation of the first true Golem is one of the foundational achievements of Dwarven civilization, attributed by the Chronicles of the Deep to Forge-Master Keldor during the Age of the First Forge. Before Keldor's breakthrough, the Holds relied entirely on organic sentinels and labor, an arrangement that left the deepest and most dangerous zones perpetually understaffed. The creation of the first Stone-Golem transformed Dwarven society's relationship with risk, allowing exploration and extraction at depths no living Dwarf could safely maintain. The Rune-Masters Guild holds the right to authorize all new Golem constructions, and the Rune-Law Codex strictly prohibits weaponization of Golems without Great Council approval — a restriction enacted after the Age of Strife, when a rogue clan attempted to commission a private Golem army.
Role in the World
Golems form the backbone of Dwarven static defense and heavy labor operations. Stone-Golems stand sentinel at key vault entrances and supply junctions throughout the Holds, while larger Automaton Guardians are deployed by the Iron Guard as mobile heavy infantry in siege operations. In peacetime, Golems handle the most physically dangerous mining and construction work, allowing Dwarven workers to supervise from safe distances.
