Appearance

The Mirewood Elk is a towering, broad-shouldered ungulate standing nearly two meters at the shoulder, its coat a dense, weatherproof grey-brown that takes on a faint silvery sheen during the winter months. Its wide, shovel-tipped antlers are ringed at the base with natural deposits of a pale mineral resin that hardens over time into an amber-like substance.

Temperament

Patient, even-tempered, and deeply loyal to those who have earned their trust, Mirewood Elk are calm under most conditions but become immovable and quietly defiant when asked to do something that conflicts with their instincts. Experienced Eldorian handlers know better than to push them.

Abilities

  • Exceptional endurance across rough, forested, and hilly terrain
  • Naturally surefootedness on muddy and root-tangled forest paths

  • Produces a mild healing resin naturally secreted at antler bases

Lore

Eldorian legend claims the first Mirewood Elk was gifted to the founding Monarch by the forest itself as an acknowledgment of the Eldorians' pledge to live in harmony with the land. The pale amber-like resin that forms at their antler bases is used by Eldorian healers as a base ingredient for wound-sealing salves, making these creatures valuable even in death. Trading partners from across Landorya have long coveted Mirewood Elk for their own transport needs, and Eldorian breeders jealously guard the bloodlines, rarely selling breeding stock outside of Eldoria's borders. It is said at The Hall of Echoes that an Eldorian rider who bonds with a Mirewood Elk calf will be mourned by the animal for decades if the rider dies first, such is the depth of their loyalty.

Role in the World

The Mirewood Elk is the backbone of overland transport in Eldoria, used to haul timber, trade goods, and supplies along forested routes where steam trains cannot reach. The Eldorians have bred and stewarded these animals for centuries, and their care falls under the combined oversight of the Ministry of Crafts and Trade and the Ministry of Natural Harmony.
