The Stoneback Colossus is a titanic quadruped whose body is an animated mass of layered granite, quartz, and living crystal, with slow-growing cave moss and mineral deposits encrusting its broad, arched back over centuries like geological strata on a living mountain. Its face is a smooth slab of polished stone broken only by two deep-set eyes of amber crystal that emit a warm, steady light, and its each slow step leaves a lasting compression in solid bedrock.

The Stoneback Colossus is profoundly patient and slow to anger, moving through the Deep Earth with the deliberate inevitability of a geological process. It shows a notable protective instinct toward smaller Earth Realm creatures sheltering beneath it and will position itself as a living shield without prompting.

The oldest Stoneback Colossi are said to predate the Elemental Kingdoms themselves, wandering the proto-Deep Earth before any Elemental civilization arose to name them, their backs already bearing ruins of forgotten pre-Elemental structures. Earth Elemental creation myths describe the first Colossus as a gift from the world itself, the planet's way of giving the Deep Earth a heartbeat. Surface civilizations have occasionally witnessed a Stoneback Colossus breaching the surface through a collapsing mountain, an event recorded in outsider legends as 'the mountain that walked away.' At the Great Conclave of Elements, a quorum cannot be called if the Earth Realm's eldest named Colossus, known as the Foundation, has not been confirmed alive by seismic communion, so integral is it to the realm's continuity.
