Appearance

The Veil-Drake is a small, semi-draconic creature roughly the length of a large housecat, with scales that shift between deep amethyst and silver depending on the intensity of surrounding magic. Its wings are vestigial, too small for flight, but fan open expressively to indicate mood. Its most distinctive feature is its breath weapon: not fire but a stream of condensed twilight that appears as a roiling purple-silver vapor carrying temperature, texture, and disorienting magical charge simultaneously.

Temperament

Veil-Drakes are territorial within the Crystal-Veil Caves but not inherently aggressive toward Fey who behave respectfully. They are intensely curious about new magical artifacts brought into their territory, approaching and sniffing at them with a focus that overrides their caution. Established relationships with Root-Singers who have negotiated coexistence terms produce Veil-Drakes that tolerate regular presence and occasionally allow physical contact.

Abilities

  • Twilight Breath: exhales condensed Veil-energy rather than fire, which disorients and temporarily disrupts the glamours of those it contacts
  • Crystal Navigation: senses Twilight Crystal formations through solid stone, making it an effective guide in the Crystal-Veil Caves
  • Veil-energy Feeding: sustains itself by absorbing ambient magical energy rather than requiring conventional food
  • Scale Resonance: scales vibrate in the presence of approaching Weave disturbances, providing a passive early-warning function
  • Partial Incorporeality: can render its body semi-translucent to slip through narrow rock formations

Lore

Drakonian scholars who have encountered records of the Veil-Drake have argued for centuries that the creatures are evidence of an ancient connection between the Drakonian lineage and the Fey realm, pointing to the semi-draconic body plan and the Fey's own description of the Crystal-Veil Caves as having volcanic origins. The Fey Court acknowledges the anatomical similarity but declines to draw the genealogical conclusion, noting that the Ember-Salamanders share similar ambiguity without anyone suggesting they are proto-dragons.

Role in the World

Veil-Drakes occupy the ecological role of apex magical scavengers within the Crystal-Veil Caves, consuming excess Veil-energy that might otherwise destabilize the crystal formations. They are not domesticated but exist in a managed coexistence with Fey researchers who treat them as co-inhabitants rather than subjects.
