Geography

The cave network descends through multiple levels beneath the Eternal Twilight Forest floor. Upper chambers are broad and cathedral-like, their crystal walls refracting ambient dusk light into thousands of prismatic beams. Deeper passages narrow and grow warmer as they approach the Ember Confluence far below. The Star-Moth Rookery occupies a vast cavern in the upper reaches where concentrated magic creates self-luminous clouds of spore-light.

Climate

Near the surface the caves are cool and still, the air tasting faintly of ozone from constant low-level magical discharge. Deeper passages warm noticeably as volcanic heat from the Drakonian territories bleeds upward through the stone. The constant hum of resonating Twilight Crystals is felt as much as heard, a low vibration in the sternum that Fey describe as the cave breathing.

History

The caves were discovered by early Mist-Fey during the Age of Solitary Spirits who noticed that illusions cast near certain quartz formations persisted long after the caster had moved on. Systematic Veilcraft research has been conducted here since the founding of the Covenant. The caves took strategic significance during the Veil-War of 842 YR, when Mist-Wardens used the amplification properties to project fleet-scale illusory armies that convinced invading Drakonians they faced overwhelming numbers.

Legend & Lore

A persistent legend holds that the largest Twilight Crystal in the deepest accessible chamber, a formation the Fey call the Prism Heart, stores every illusion ever cast within the caves as a kind of passive archive. Scholars who meditate before it claim to see fragments of ancient visions cycling across its surface at the edge of perception. No formal research has been able to verify the claim, which some Elder Seers believe is itself an illusion the crystal projects to discourage excavation.

Life & Culture

The caves are tended by a permanent community of Veil-Weavers and Dream-Smiths who use the ambient amplification to practice techniques that would be impossible in less magically saturated environments. Apprentices serve mandatory rotations here to sharpen precision: in the caves, an imprecise glamour becomes immediately obvious as it blooms uncontrollably across the chamber walls. Veil-Drake hatchlings are carefully monitored by Root-Singers who have negotiated peaceable coexistence terms with the semi-draconic inhabitants, exchanging fish from marsh-pools for access to their breath-condensate, a reagent used in advanced illusion-binding.
