Spirit of the Soil

Spirit of the Soil belongs to guardian spirit in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Spirits of the Soil dwell within the fertile farmland and river valleys of the Central Plains, most powerfully concentrated in the ancient fields surrounding Thistledown and Willowbrook.. For the Halflings - The Peaceful Younger Race, Spirits of the Soil are the divine partners in their agricultural philosophy of Balance with the Land, manifesting during soil-resto… Key abilities include Soil restoration, directly replenishes depleted nutrients in farmland during halfling rites, Root communion, communicates agricultural warnings through the root systems of crops, and Blight warding, neutralizes fungal and pestilent corruption spreading through fields.

Spirits of the Soil manifest as softly glowing, vaguely humanoid shapes woven from dark, rich loam, trailing wisps of root fiber and the faint perfume of rain-soaked earth. Their faces, when they form one, resemble the faces of long-buried seeds, creased, patient, and barely discernible beneath a shifting surface of living earth.

Spirits of the Soil are profoundly patient and non-aggressive, responding only to sincere acts of stewardship and reverence. They are indifferent to politics and strife, concerned entirely with the health and balance of the living earth beneath their charge.

Halfling oral tradition holds that the Spirits of the Soil predate the Halflings themselves, having been seeded into the earth by the Celestials long before any people walked the Central Plains. When Elvish mages once attempted to study the Spirits through arcane means during a visit brokered by the Council of the Five Realms, the Spirits simply ceased to appear for an entire growing season, a catastrophic disruption that nearly caused a famine, and ever after made halflings deeply wary of outside magical interference in their rites. The most revered halfling elders in Merryvale claim to carry on ongoing, wordless dialogues with the Spirits over lifetimes, learning from them which fields to rest, which to sow, and when the Great River will flood. It is said that a field abandoned by its Spirit of the Soil will never grow food worthy of eating again, no matter how it is tended.
