Appearance
The Granite-Toad is a squat, heavy-bodied amphibian roughly the size of a human head, its warty skin a near-perfect match for the grey-and-black mottled stone of mine tunnel walls, broken only by two large amber eyes that glow faintly in complete darkness. When still, it is almost indistinguishable from a rounded chunk of basalt, many a miner has reached out to use one as a handhold.
Temperament
Granite-Toads are profoundly unhurried and contemplative, sitting motionless for hours and moving only to feed or to sound their warning croak. Miners who work alongside them develop an almost reverential calm in their presence, reading the toad's stillness as a sign of safety.
Abilities
- • Extreme sensitivity to ground vibration, detecting cave-in stress fractures hours in advance
- • Loud, resonant croaking audible throughout tunnel networks
- • Skin secretions that neutralize certain toxic mine gases when absorbed through proximity
- • Perfect stone camouflage rendering it nearly invisible at rest
Lore
The oldest known Orcish mining ballad, called 'The Toad Who Sang Twice,' recounts a cave-in at the Pit of Unbinding in which a single Granite-Toad croaked its warning not once but twice in rapid succession, a behavior miners had never seen before, causing the entire work-gang to evacuate moments before the largest recorded collapse in Orcish history. To this day, a double-croak from a Granite-Toad is treated as an emergency signal requiring immediate evacuation, and the ballad is sung at the start of every Iron-Walk tour led by retired miners through the Iron-Vein Mines.
Role in the World
Among the Orcs, the Granite-Toad is treated with near-sacred respect in mining culture, its warning croak is said to have saved entire work-gangs from collapse within the mines of the Iron-Vein Range and the tunnels beneath Kragthar Hold. No Orcish miner would willingly harm one, and deliberately killing a Granite-Toad in a mine is considered a serious taboo that invites the wrath of the stone itself.
