The Rust-Beetle is a tiny, flat-bodied insect barely the width of a thumbnail, its carapace a mottled pattern of reddish-brown and dull orange that renders it nearly invisible against corroded iron surfaces. Its mandibles are disproportionately large for its size, serrated and hardened to chisel through layers of oxidized metal with mechanical precision.

Rust-Beetles are industrious to the point of single-mindedness, moving in coordinated streams across corroded surfaces with no apparent aggression toward living creatures. They ignore all disturbances unless their food source is physically removed.

The Orcs joke that a forge without a Rust-Beetle colony is a forge with a short future. Stone-Keeper Lurak is credited with first observing wild Rust-Beetle colonies cleaning exposed iron veins and recognizing the practice's potential, leading to the earliest cultivation methods still used today. Dwarven engineers who have witnessed Rust-Beetle cleaning operations have reportedly expressed both admiration and deep unease, concerned that escaped colonies could devastate their own iron stockpiles if ever introduced to Dwarven tunnel systems.
