Appearance

The Thunder-Raven is a large, powerfully built bird roughly the size of a war-shield, with glossy black plumage that crackles with faint blue static electricity along the trailing edges of its wings. Its beak is heavy and hooked, stained at the tip with a permanent dark-grey residue from years of nesting amid storm-charged metal spires.

Temperament

Thunder-Ravens are boldly curious and highly intelligent, often observed manipulating small objects with their beaks or mimicking the clang of hammer-strikes near forges. They form strong pair bonds and will aggressively defend their nesting towers, diving at any creature, Orc or otherwise, that approaches uninvited.

Abilities

  • Calls that carry over extreme distances and cut through battlefield noise
  • Innate resistance to electrical discharge, including lightning strikes
  • Ability to navigate accurately through sulfurous volcanic fog
  • Dive-bombing strikes that deliver a minor electrical shock on contact

Lore

It is said that when the Storm-Mother is pleased with the Orcs, she sends Thunder-Ravens to roost in great numbers on the siege-engines before a battle, a sign of inevitable victory. The garrison of the Tower of Broken Banners claims that a single aged Thunder-Raven has nested there for over forty years, and that it will cry out in a unique three-note call whenever a hostile force moves within a day's march, a detail that has saved the border post from surprise attack no fewer than seven times.

Role in the World

Thunder-Ravens serve the Orcs as living signal-horns on the battlefield, their distinctive calls trained to carry specific tactical meanings understood by Orcish warriors. They nest atop siege-engine towers and the Iron Teeth watchtowers, where their natural alarm calls provide an early-warning layer that no enemy saboteur can easily silence.
