Appearance

The Star-Owl is a large nocturnal bird whose feathers are deep black threaded with filaments of luminous silver, giving it the appearance of a fragment of the night sky given wings. Its talons and beak carry a faint crystalline sheen, and its pupils contract into perfect star-shaped apertures when it focuses its aetheric-sensitive sight.

Temperament

Star-Owls are composed and watchful, projecting an air of ancient patience that unnerves those unaccustomed to creatures touched by aether. They do not bond as deeply as Thought-Foxes but choose their handlers with evident discernment, refusing service to those they judge unworthy.

Abilities

  • Aetheric-sensitive plumage that resonates with active ley-lines, guiding navigation
  • Celestial observation, capable of tracking aetheric anomalies across vast distances
  • Message-carrying across planar boundaries when guided by a Star-Sage's intent
  • Silent flight enhanced by aetheric dampening of sound
  • Perception of dimensional thin-points and nascent Veil rifts

Lore

The Veil-Wardens of the Order of the Starlight kept meticulous records of every anomaly a Star-Owl ever reported, manuscripts that the Mystarans now guard in Mystara as the Codex of Witnessed Skies. A particular legend holds that a single Star-Owl named Velareth flew without rest for thirty days to warn the Order of an aetheric catastrophe building beneath the Oceara's ocean territories, and that its warning, heeded in time, prevented a planar collapse. The Mystaran Ministry of Planar Affairs to this day keeps a Star-Owl as its official symbol, embossed on every treaty and planar accord.

Role in the World

The Order of the Starlight employed Star-Owls as celestial observers and long-distance messengers, their aetheric-sensitive plumage making them indispensable for monitoring the boundaries of the Veil. As Guardians of the Veil, the Order relied on Star-Owls to deliver warnings of dimensional rifts to distant outposts, including, on occasion, to allies among the other Ancient Five civilizations.
