Appearance

The Forest Wyrm is a large, semi-intelligent serpentine creature of the Eldris Forest's deep interior, typically spanning fifteen to twenty feet in length when fully grown, with a girth comparable to the trunk of a young tree. Its scales are iridescent in earth tones — deep green, dark brown, and occasional amber — with an underlying shimmer that catches light in ways suggesting very faint bioluminescence. The head is broad and flat, bearing eyes of unusual amber clarity that practitioners describe as carrying a quality of slow and deliberate cognition absent from fully non-intelligent beasts. The body moves with remarkable silence for its size.

Temperament

Forest Wyrms exhibit a slow and watchful intelligence that experienced Rangers describe as deliberate rather than limited. They are not aggressive toward Sylvan Elves under ordinary circumstances, but they respond with extreme danger to perceived territorial intrusions and to the presence of magical corruption, which appears to cause them a form of distress that manifests as unpredictable behavior.

Abilities

  • Exceptional physical strength allowing it to crush or constrict prey significantly larger than itself
  • A partial magical resistance that deflects minor workings and dampens the efficacy of Greenspeaking directed against it
  • Heightened sensitivity to magical contamination, becoming agitated or aggressive in areas of corrupted dream-weave
  • The capacity to navigate the root networks of the deep forest floor with uncanny precision
  • A low subsonic vibration produced when territorial or threatened, detectable to Sylvan Elves through foot-contact with forest floor

Lore

The Forest Wyrm occupies a complex position in Sylvan Elf cultural understanding — neither sacred nor despised, but regarded with the respectful wariness due a powerful creature of the deep forest whose intelligence exceeds the merely instinctual without rising to full sapience. Ranger Captain Kieran Stormarrow's quiver, made from the skin of a Forest Wyrm he personally slew after it had been corrupted by magical contamination, is the most prominent artifact of this fraught relationship in current Sylvan life. The act is viewed differently by different segments of the community: some see it as appropriate protection of the forest; others as a loss mourned as well as a threat addressed.

Role in the World

The Forest Wyrm occupies a predator-cleaner role in the Eldris Forest's ecology, consuming corrupted or diseased organisms and serving as an involuntary indicator species for the health of the dream-weave in the deep forest zones it inhabits.
