Deeproot Grove occupies the innermost zone of the Eldris Forest, where the most ancient and largest trees grow. Their canopies form a near-continuous ceiling that reduces sunlight at ground level to cathedral-quality shafts of diffuse green light. The root networks here are the most complex in the forest, with several of the oldest trees having root systems that extend for hundreds of feet and interweave with their neighbors'. The Heart of the Forest — the oldest known living tree in the Eldris Forest — stands at the grove's center.

Deeproot Grove's climate is self-regulating in ways that practitioners describe as intentional. Temperature remains extraordinarily constant through all seasons, as though the grove's magical saturation dampens external weather fluctuations. Rainfall is distributed with uncanny evenness. The air carries a faint mineral charge that long-term visitors describe as similar to the sensation before lightning strikes — a persistent low-level magical ionization that appears to be a natural byproduct of the grove's magical density.

Deeproot Grove's special status within Sylvan civilization predates any written record, appearing in the earliest oral traditions as always having been set apart from ordinary forest life. The grove has been a site of major magical events in Sylvan history, including the workings Elenia the Greenweaver performed to heal the forest during the ancient catastrophe. More recently, the Lorekeeper's Circle has noted intermittent disturbances in the grove's dream-weave pattern — subtle, irregular, and not yet understood — that have elevated monitoring protocols and raised quiet concern among senior practitioners.

Within the grove, Greenspeakers who attain sufficient communion depth report encountering a presence they cannot identify — not an ancestral spirit, not the consciousness of any specific tree, but something older and larger that seems to observe them with curiosity before withdrawing into silence. The Lorekeeper's Circle has documented hundreds of such encounters across centuries, with consistent descriptions of the same quality of attention. Some scholars believe this is the Great Oak's deepest awareness; others believe it is something that predates the Great Oak entirely. None have been willing to press deeper into the encounter to find out.

Deeproot Grove supports no permanent settlements. Those who enter do so on specific mission — Ranger patrol, Greenspeaking workings, Lorekeeper's Circle inspections, or the rare scholarly expeditions approved by the Sylvan Council after extensive deliberation. Extended time in the grove is considered both a privilege and a trial: the heightened dream-weave sensitivity it induces produces vivid nocturnal visions and a tendency toward altered time-perception that makes reintegration into ordinary Sylvan life temporarily difficult on return. Rangers assigned to Deeproot patrol are rotated frequently and monitored carefully upon exit.
