Geography
Heartwood occupies the central canopy of the oldest growth in the Eldris Forest, where individual trees reach heights of two hundred feet or more. The city spreads across multiple elevation levels connected by rope-and-root bridges, spiral staircases grown from living trunk, and carefully maintained gaps that allow light to filter down to the forest floor below. The city's footprint covers several square miles of canopy.
Climate
Sheltered by the dense canopy above and warmed by the magical energies that suffuse the Eldris Forest's center, Heartwood enjoys the mildest microclimate in the forest. Rainfall is filtered to a gentle drip through the canopy's layers, and wind, elsewhere a force to be reckoned with in the High Canopy, barely stirs the air at the city's dwelling levels. Bioluminescence from resident fungi and organisms keeps the city softly lit even on moonless nights.

History
Heartwood's founding is associated in oral tradition with the consolidation of the scattered Grove communities into a unified Sylvan civilization, an event linked to the era of Elenia the Greenweaver, whose unprecedented Greenspeaking called the earliest structures into being. Since that founding, Heartwood has never fallen to enemy action, though the Heartroot Ward protecting its perimeter has been tested and renewed across countless generations. Three Lorekeepers in succession have presided over the city in the current era.
Legend & Lore
The oldest living tree at Heartwood's core — the one around which the Council Hall grew — is said by Lore-Elders to be the first companion tree ever planted, set in the earth at the dawn of Sylvan civilization by Elenia the Greenweaver herself. Whether this is historical fact or mythological resonance, the tree's rings have never been counted, and those Greenspeakers who have attempted to commune with it most deeply report a sensation of awareness so ancient and vast that they withdrew from the contact shaken and unwilling to describe what they sensed. The tree is never named, only called the First.
Life & Culture
Daily life in Heartwood flows around the rhythms of the forest. Mornings begin before dawn with the quiet attunement practice, individual elves communing briefly with the surrounding trees before moving into their roles as Rangers, healers, Greenspeakers, woodcrafters, or scholars. The central platform hosts communal meals, storytelling, and the transmission of lore between generations. Evenings draw the city's population toward the Grand Amphitheater in the Songwood district, where Calador Starbow's performances of the old songs are among the most cherished communal experiences in Sylvan life. The city does not sleep so much as breathe, its bioluminescent lanterns dimming slowly as households retire, the forest around it continuing its own vast and ancient dreaming.
