Appearance

The Granite Hawk is a broad-winged raptor the size of a large eagle, its plumage a striking pattern of charcoal grey and iron-brown that makes it near-invisible against mountain rock faces. Its talons are extraordinarily dense, almost mineral in composition, with ridged edges capable of scoring shallow grooves into stone, and its beak hooks into a dark, chisel-sharp point.

Temperament

Granite Hawks are proud, aloof birds that tolerate their handlers rather than warm to them, demanding respect through consistency and patience. They are extraordinarily reliable on a memorized route but deeply resistant to being redirected mid-flight, a trait that made them trusted but inflexible messengers.

Abilities

  • Talons can scratch messages or markers into stone surfaces
  • Navigates sealed mountain passes and tunnel mouths with unerring precision
  • Exceptional low-light vision adapted for cavern interiors and deep overcast peaks
  • Carries weighted stone-tablet messages in reinforced talon-pouches

Lore

Talamhari law protected Granite Hawks above virtually all other animals, interfering with a Hawk in transit was punishable by the same penalty as destroying a rune-archive. When the Talamhari civilization began to fracture in its final centuries, it was said that the Hawks sensed the discord before any leader admitted it, entire message-lines fell silent as the birds refused to fly routes that passed over territories in conflict. The Dwarven Holds of the Iron Peaks still maintain small breeding populations of Granite Hawks in their upper eyrie-towers, using them for inter-Hold communication across The Veiled Pass when magical relays fail.

Role in the World

Granite Hawks were the primary long-distance communication system of the Talamhari, carrying rune-carved stone tablets between subterranean cities along the Granite Spine and connecting outlying mining outposts to the central Heartforge administration.
