Echo Owls belongs to magical beast in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Echo Owls nest in the upper reaches of the Temple of the First Dawn's stone towers and in the crystal formations of the Chronos Sanctum's external walls, where Nous-domain resonance is strongest. Smaller populations are found in the Sphere-Forests of Eldara among the stardust trees, where the acoustic environment appears to enhance their call-propagation range. Echo Owls are nocturnal birds of medium size, their feathers a deep indigo-black with individual shafts that catch starlight and refract it in the teal frequency associated with Nous' domain. Their facial discs are proportionally larger than any other owl species, cupped to an almost architectural degree, and their eyes are a luminous pale amber that appears to glow with independent light in total darkness. When they call, observers nearby report that the sound arrives not through the air alone but as a faint sensation of resonance along the spine, as though the call has a component that bypasses ordinary hearing.

Echo Owls are solitary and selective in their interactions with humans, approaching only those whose Nous-domain resonance frequency registers within a specific range. They demonstrate what the Order's naturalists classify as purposeful behaviour: individual owls have been observed returning to the same monk multiple nights in a row and producing the same call sequence, behaviour consistent with deliberate communication attempts. The Celestial Order's oldest records, predating Veyra's tenure, mention Echo Owls as having been present at the Temple since Elandros first arrived at the summit: the founding tradition holds that a single owl sat in the crystal amphitheatre throughout the first night of Elandros' meditation and produced a three-hour sequence of calls that the Oracle later identified as a condensed version of the Codices of Harmony in Celestial Cant. Whether this account is literal or metaphorical is a point of ongoing scholarly debate, but the Order maintains the aviary at the Chronos Sanctum in part as a continuous attempt to decode whatever message the owls may be carrying.
