That claim has placed them in prolonged tension with expanding mortal civilisations. Among the Fey, a shaper's bond with a particular grove or river is deeply sacred, akin to marriage. Breaking it through neglect is one of the gravest social transgressions in Court society.
Lore
The oldest recorded act of Wild-Heart Shaping was the Sealing of the Verdant Marches. Hundreds of Grove-Wardens linked their bonds at once to wall off Landorya's central wilderness from mortal expansion that threatened to reduce it to farmland within a generation. The Working took three years and cost eleven shapers their mobility. Their bodies slowly rooted into the great trees that mark the Marches' border. Those eleven are venerated as the Rooted Saints. Younger Fey make pilgrimages to press their palms against the bark and listen for the slow dreaming thoughts still turning within. It is said the Fey Court would go to war, something it has done only twice in recorded history, before allowing those trees to be felled.
