Common Applications

  • Breath of the Wastes, an exhaled cone of killing cold that flash-freezes everything in its path
  • The Glacier's Fist, a massive hand of conjured ice that rises from the ground to crush or hurl
  • Veil of the White Storm, a personal shroud of swirling snow and sleet that blinds and deflects projectiles
  • Shardcall, detonation of an existing ice surface into a storm of razor splinters
  • Heart of Winter, a sustained ritual that drops temperature across a battlefield or settlement to paralyzing lows

Cultural Significance

Ice magic is birthright and spiritual bond for the Frostborn. Proof that the Wastes accepted them as kin rather than prey. Command of this element made them indispensable guardians of Landorya's northern borders. No southern force has found a comfortable way to wage war in conditions the Frostborn freely manipulate.

Lore

Frostborn oral tradition holds that the first of their people did not wield ice magic. They survived it. Over generations cold remade them until it was as natural as breath. There is a legend of a great Frostcaller known only as the Winter-That-Walked. During a catastrophic southern invasion he single-handedly raised a mountain range of ice across the passes and sealed the Frostbound Wastes for an entire generation. The act saved the Frostborn and entombed the caster in the glacier he had raised. Some Elder Scribes claim that on the coldest nights new runes appear on that glacier's face, still being carved from within. Using ice magic to harm a fellow Frostborn is deeply taboo. The element is believed to remember the transgression and turn on the offending caster.
