Key Aspects

0

Twelve-second limit and Assembly authorization

1

Temporal mathematics and paradox-prevention calculus

2

Chrono-Lock operation and calibration

3

Aether-anchoring to mechanical timekeeping frames

4

Temporal Ethics and legal oversight

Practitioners

0

Certified Chronomancers of the Guild of Chronomancers

1

Senior Artificer Academicians in temporal theory

2

Assembly Paradox Arbiters who authorize extended intervals

3

Clock-Blade duelists trained in split-second temporal combat

Limitations

By the Balance Codex, all effects last twelve seconds or less. Longer work needs direct Clockwork Assembly authorization. Full certification takes twenty years at an Artificer Academy. Practitioners must also pass the Temporal Ethics Exam.

Common Applications

  • Chrono-Lock Stasis, freezes a local field for up to twelve seconds
  • Gear-Rewind Pulse, rolls a mechanical device back several seconds
  • Temporal Lens Sight, shows an object's immediate past as a ghostly overlay
  • Second-Seam Stitch, splices two adjacent moments and closes a paradox loop
  • Interval Anchor, stops unauthorized temporal magic near a Chrono-Lock

Cultural Significance

Chronomancy holds a high and feared place in Gnomish society. It is the only school with its own ethics exam and legal oversight for advanced use. The invention of the Chrono-Lock in Year 830 AE is a national holiday in Gearhaven. Many link the Ember Rift Conflict of Year 842 AE to unauthorized temporal work on the city-state borders.

Lore

Gnomes invented Chronomancy through an engineering accident. A founder of the Guild of Chronomancers tested an early resonance-regulator on a prototype clock tower and froze the tower's surroundings. Witnesses called it a breath that lasted forever. The Clockwork Assembly held a closed session on whether to ban the magic entirely. The compromise became the model for later regulation: twelve-second limits, two decades of training, and the Temporal Ethics Exam. Soul-Gearing is said to have been first tried by a disgraced Chronomancer who wanted to bind a mind to a clockwork chassis. The horror of the result is taught to every first-year Academy student.
