Key Aspects

0

Current-reading and current-shaping to alter tidal flow

1

Storm-calling and storm-stilling through resonance with the Tidesong Gyre

2

Bioluminescent channeling from enchanted microorganisms in the water

3

Deep-sea communion across vast oceanic distances

4

Salt-binding wards from crystallized sea salt and charged brine

Practitioners

0

Tidal Weavers, trained sea-mages who serve island councils

1

Abyssal Scribes, deep-divers who maintain underwater shrines

2

Stormcallers, weather-workers on the most vital trade vessels

3

Elder Tide-Touched with passive, involuntary mastery of minor tidal effects

Limitations

A Tidal Weaver cut off from salt water for more than a season suffers tide-sickness. Magical and physical strength erode. The ocean must be partner, not servant. Attempts to dominate rather than converse make spells recoil unpredictably.

Common Applications

  • The Tidesong Embrace, aligns a hull with the Gyre for speed and stability
  • Salt-Veil, a brine mist that confuses hostile navigators and hides the caster from magical sight
  • Deep Whisper, a submerged trance receiving visions of distant waters and their creatures
  • Stormhush, peels apart an oncoming squall current by current
  • Brine Shackle, crystallizes salt water around limbs or a keel until the tide turns

Cultural Significance

Tidal Weaving is the cornerstone of Islander identity. Governance, trade, and spiritual life rest on it. Its philosophy of partnership rather than domination underpins every institution across the archipelago. Scholars and diplomats from across Landorya travel to the Shimmering Isles to study its principles. The Islanders are the continent's preeminent sea traders and most sought-after teachers of the maritime arts.

Lore

Islander tradition holds that Tidal Weaving was remembered, not invented. The first Ocean's Children from the Nereids' enchanted foam already carried the tides in their blood. The oldest written record sits on a submerged basalt tablet near the Abyss Gate, kept by the Abyssal Scribes. It details a pact between founding settlers and the three great currents: stewardship in exchange for power. During the War of the Blockade a circle of Tidal Weavers called the Tidesong Gyre into a spiral that shattered the enemy formation without sinking a single Islander vessel. To this day unilateral redirection of a current is taboo. The penalty is severing a practitioner's salt-bond, exile from the magic itself.
