Key Aspects

0

Reading chronological layers of a water body's past

1

Recovering feelings and intent left by past events

2

Echo-mapping historical scenes from water traces

3

Anchoring a memory into a tapestry or Echo-Crown

4

Following one memory-thread from river to lake to aquifer

Practitioners

0

Echo Sages who read deep historical strata without losing themselves

1

River Scholars of the Guild of River Scholars who make Runic Maps

2

All Naiads with basic access to surface-level water-memory

3

Underglow Clan readers of ancient aquifers

Limitations

Water-Memory weakens with distance from the event. Pollution, stagnation, and magical contamination corrupt it. In degraded water a reader may take in fragmented, false, or traumatic impressions that are hard to expel. Long deep-reading sessions can leave a practitioner unable to tell their own memories from the water's. That condition is called the Drift.

Common Applications

  • Deep Immersion, dissolves awareness into a water body's oldest strata
  • Echo-Casting, projects a retrieved memory as a visible, audible scene
  • The Anchoring Weave, binds a memory permanently into a crafted object
  • Current Threading, follows a memory-trace upstream or downstream to its origin
  • The Forgetting Rite, erases a traumatic or dangerous memory from a water body

Cultural Significance

Water-Memory Reading underpins all Naiad historiography. The Archives of the Deep, from the Middle Period, are not written records but curated bodies of water whose memories generations of River Scholars layered and cross-checked. Wellmother Selenne is venerated above all other Wellmothers by the Echo Sages.

Lore

The Archive-Waters of Aqualis record that River Scholar Tessivane was the first Naiad to Cross-Body Thread the full length of the Silverstream and recover a coherent Age of Springs account from water that had flowed unbroken since the Wellmothers' time. The reading took forty days and left Tessivane permanently silver-eyed. The Naiads say she saw too much truth at once. Her recovered memories formed the base of the Chronicle of the Deep as it is known today. The Echo-Crown she used to anchor them is kept under guard in the Pearl-Spire Exchange and is never to be worn again.
