The Codex Aetheris was not written in words alone. Its most important passages are functional sigil-arrays. A trained Sigil-Master reading the Codex reads a text and activates a working at once. The founders meant the Codex to be self-teaching: each page imprints a resonance-memory of its content into the reader's aetheric field. During the Dark Times, Sigil-Masters let the Great Veil run without constant active maintenance. Layered Veil-Ward Inscriptions across thousands of crystal pillars let a skeleton crew monitor what would otherwise have needed an army of Veil-Weavers in perpetual focus. One legend holds that a Sigil-Master, alone in the final days before the migration to what became Mystara, cut a sigil of such complexity into the Astral Plateau bedrock that it has never fully activated. When it does, it will complete the working its creator began, though no living scholar has decoded what that working is.
